The following is a guest blog-post by Tahir Shaikh, a male Hijama Practitioner in Gloucester,
EnglandHijama at the Pain Relief Clinic in Gloucester, UK. by Tahir Shaikh
- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?
My name is Tahir Shaikh and I run the Pain Relief Clinic in Gloucester, UK. We use a combination of skills on offer such as Osteopathy/Massage, Medical Acupuncture and Cupping Therapy to help with injuries, aches and pains. I was first made aware of Hijama thorough a patient who mentioned the benefits they received. I took an interest in cupping therapy as another form of treatment for my patients, and learnt that there are 2 types; Dry cupping (suction on skin to encourage circulation) and Wet Cupping (removal of dead blood cells and toxins)
- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?
We have dealt with alot of issues, ranging from ankle/leg pain to headaches/neck pain and other muscle/joint issues. The majority of our Hijama patients book in to revive the Arabic tradition of the Prophet (pbuh) and get the treatment that is recommended in holy scriptures. We have been asked alot regarding hair loss and weight loss with the use of Hijama, but presently we only offer treatment for health and injuries as opposed for cosmetic purposes.
- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?
One of the most successful experiences we have had at the clinic is when an elderly gentleman made a 2 hour trip to visit the clinic for Hijama treatment. We helped him though the door as he was limping, got him comfortable, took a thorough consultation and began the Hijama treatment personalised for him. He felt great after and was happy to walk out unaided! We have had some really good results within the community for low back / neck / shoulder pains, not just amongst the general public, but also for elite professional athletes.
- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)
Cupping is a great form of treatment to help the body heal by affecting the circulatory system, we recommend getting Hijama done atleast 4 times a year with the seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) so the body is well prepared to deal with the pathogens that come with those seasons. If a patient has a problem we would recommend getting more regular treatment. Dry Cupping can be done every week depending on age and issues being dealt with.
- What is the status and overall prevalance of hijama therapy in Gloucester / England? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?
Hijama is something that not many people have heard of in Gloucester. Previously there have been therapists who came from various parts of England to treat those who are aware of it. One of the aims of the clinic is to raise awareness of this forgotten tradition, and to show people how beneficial it can be once they are willing to put their trust in it. We appreciate many people can be sceptical when ‘removing blood’ is mentioned, but we are fully trained and provide a safe, professional experience.
- Is there anything else you would like to add?
