Hijamah in Rawalpindi, Pakistan

The following is a guest blog-post in the form of a written interview with Muhammad Ghufran, a male cupping therapist in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.

Al-Hijamah (Cure by Sunnah)
- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is Muhammad Ghufran (Abu Umer). By profession, I am a systems engineer and got my Software Engineering degree from University of Lahore. I am working since 2001 and now I am working as Asst. Director Projects in Irish based company in Pakistan. On one of my foreign trips to Dubai, my elder brother introduced hijamah to me and encouraged me to get training of this highly recommended Prophetic Treatment. Further we both got training from Sharjah (UAE) by an Egyptian teacher Shaykh Saeed. He is well trained and an experienced cupper.

Now I am is a certified cupping therapist; practicing past many years.

I am a certified Tibb-e-Nabawi Practitioner (National Research Council of Alternative Medicines), doing practice in this Prophetic treatment as “Practice makes a man perfect.”

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

Alhumdolillah, due to applying thousands of cups and treating hundreds of patient, I am specialized in many illnesses like Skin diseases (Allergies), Sciatica Pain, Alopecia, Renal (kidney disease), Infertility, Thyroid, Tonsils, Rheumatism, Hypertension, Liver and gall bladder disease.

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they? Please provide some case studies.

According to the Hadith,
Anas ibn Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama)”
Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5371).

> I had treated a female patient Mrs. Afzal Ahmed (my elder sister), when I had started Hijamah years back; she was suffering with Skin Allergy and high level of Itching. I had applied cups to her and she was cured alhumdolillah. Her faith on hijamah was strengthened. Later, I had applied some more points and just after two weeks, she informed that her hair loss problem is improved as well.

> A patient of Age 25 was suffering with eye problem. Doctors had recommend him to make an operation for it. He got my contact details from the internet and contacted me. We have treated him and applied four points (2 on head, 2 between the shoulders). Alhumdolillah, his problem was fixed and later after one month, he came again for his stomach and urine problem. Just after the treatment of 4 hours he sent me a SMS:

“Assalam-o-Alikum, It is the blessing of Allah that my problem is fixed 100/100. Perfect solution in no time.”

> A patient came in our Al-Hijamah Centre suffering Renal Disease (Severe Kidney pain). One of our senior staff members Mr. Shehzad Nazir applied four cups to him. His pain vanished on the spot, alhumdolillah.

Similarly I have hundreds of cases with me to write about but I have just shared some of the experiences. It is our usual practice to recite the hadith of Hijamah for Patient to constitute his yaqeen. We also suggest for A'maal-e-Salehaat,  Sadaqah and Sala’at.

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

Hijamah (cupping) is a preventative therapy for every disease. According to the Hadith,

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

Hijamah  (cupping) gets rid of acidic toxic waste which accumulates in our bodies (blood stasis) as we grow older. Sources of toxic waste include:
  • The polluted air we breathe;
  • Toxic chemicals found in your food, water, drinks, household chemicals & toiletries;
  • Environmental waste in your neighborhood;
  • Intoxicating drinks, narcotic drugs, junk food and smoking;
  • Waste products of normal body metabolism; Products of medicinal drugs metabolism;
  • Impact of trauma and accidents on our body;
  • Toxins from mental stress, anger, anxiety and depression;
      So among the benefits of hijama are that it helps with:
  • Detoxification of the blood, stimulation of new blood formation;
  • Increased blood circulation & pain reduction;
I recommend to go through this treatment after 3~6 months at least.

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

The best days for cupping (hijama) are the 17th, 19th and 21st of the Islamic, lunar month.
Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever  wants to perform cupping (hijama) then let him search for the 17th, 19th and 21st…" [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3486)].

I usually apply cups in myself on any of the following days of each lunar month that is 17th, 19th and 21st. One of my staff members Mr. Shehzad Nazir usually does this treatment for me.

- What is the overall prevalence of hijama therapy now in Pakistan? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?

It was new for many people in Pakistan. But with the passage of time, now alhumdolillah hundreds of therapists are doing this treatment in several cities of Pakistan. Unfortunately it’s not recognized by the ministry of health in Pakistan due to many reasons. There are many private hospitals and clinics where therapists are doing this treatment but there is no govt. hospital where this prophetic treatment is being practiced.

- Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located and what services do you offer?
My clinic is located in Rawalpindi near Islamabad International Airport, Pakistan.
We also offer all kind of Hijamah apparatus like local and imported Hijamah Kits, local and imported disposable cups in all sizes are available. We also serve long distance hijamah training courses.

Cell#: +92 (0) 315 511 50 35, +92 (0) 343 500 00 55

- Is there anything else you would like to add?

Hijamah is a sunnah treatment. One should take care while practicing it.

Sunnah Days For Cupping (Hijama) Shawwal 1432 / September, 2011

The following is a guest blog-post by Zahid Malik, a male cupping therapist from Manchester, England.
Did you know that The Prophet (pbuh) explained that Hijama is one of the best medicines that we have? :

"The best medicine with which you treat yourselves is Hijama", or "The best treatment you can use is ....Hijama."
(Reference: Al Bukhari, 5371)

We hope & pray that you are all in good health & in the best state of Imaan Inshallah.

If you were like most of us during this month of Ramadhan...eating samosas, pokareh & kebabs for almost every Iftar, then you can count on us that this will not do any justice for your internal bodies & organs.

The fat deposits can lead to serious health complications. A common development related to fried foods is heart disease as they can clog up the arteries & ultimately the heart organ. Ramadhan was the month of fasting & not feasting :-)

Remember HEALTH is WEALTH and HIJAMA is the fastest & most direct form of DETOX known to mankind!

The sunnah days for September are:

15th, 17th & 19th September
equivalent to:
17th, 19th & 21st Shawwal
(Thursday, Saturday & Monday)

Jazakallah khair and thank you for your continued support from all the staff @ The Therapy Clinic, Manchester, UK.

Hijama Cupping Therapy in USA Part 2

The following is a follow-up article by Hijama Nation, on their earlier post of 12 May, 2011:Hijama Cupping Therapy in USA and in response to the following comment made on 21 August, 2011 that required further clarification:

Hijama Cupping Therapy in USA Part 2 - by Hijama Nation

This article is a response to the comment made on another article on www.ahealth.co.uk . The comment was made anonymously. Unfortunately, it seems that Mr/Ms Anonymous may have misunderstood our aims and objectives.  So we would like to clear those up in response. We hope to alleviate any concerns that readers may have.

Firstly, cupping therapy is not banned in the United States. Most states allow dry and massage cupping as a modality if you are a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT).  In most States, wet cupping is allowed if you are a licensed MD, Physicians Assistant (PA) or Licensed Acupuncturist as it is minor surgery. Indeed, Bloodletting is not allowed generally-but we must remember that Hijama wet cupping is NOT bloodletting. Bloodletting is drawing blood from veins. There is a huge difference between scratching the superficial skin and drawing blood from veins.

Furthermore, we are not trying to “force” Hijama on the USA or Canada at all. In fact, we are trying to build a positive image of Hijama being a safe, effective and holistic alternative to Western medicine. The main aim is to essentially teach our own Muslims about it first, before we can even educate non-Muslims about it. The tragedy is that most of our Ummah does not know of this divine therapy and we are all too scared to practice it because we are worried about looking bad.

Hijama Nation’s core philosophy is that a Hijama Therapist should be adequately trained and certified and does not have to be a Licensed MD. If Hijama Practitioner is a Medical Doctor, that is a plus. We hope there are more Medical Doctors involved in this practice, but the reality is, we don’t have enough doctors who know about Hijama or are interested in practicing Hijama. The next best thing is to have trained Hijama practitioners, who can provide this sunnah treatment to the Ummah at large.

As with everything in Islam, there must be balance and moderation. A professional Hijama Therapist MUST have relevant training and certification. We believe that it is imperative for all Hijama Students to have a high level of theoretical and practical training, health and safety qualifications and sufficient knowledge of Physiology and Anatomy to practice upon the general public. Thus, even if someone does not have a medical background, they will become a certified professional in the field of alternative therapy.

We also maintain that it is our religious right to perform Hijama. In the USA, we are campaigning to be exempt from medical licensure on religious grounds. The reason is, that the Hijama practitioners with no medical license are producing great results without any side effects for the patient. Because of that reason we don’t feel that a Hijama practitioner has to go through 6-8 years of school to get license to practice. A professional Hijama Therapist MUST have sufficient training. We believe that it is important for all Hijama Practitioners to have a high level of theoretical and practical training, health and safety training and sufficient knowledge of Physiology and Anatomy before they can practice upon the general public.

In fact, we are shocked at how many work undercover; there is whole a network of Hijama practitioners. Surely, these practitioners should be able to get licensed and get regulated and work officially, rather than working in fear and doing something illegally.  Isn’t this what we want to avoid? By sitting back and doing nothing, we will be actively encouraging people to work under the table, and risk injuring someone; therefore, increasing liability and chances of prohibition. Shouldn’t we be working towards getting Hijama recognized and regulated?

Even though Hijama Nation cannot practice Hijama currently in U.S, we can still educate people about it. Further, the Department of Health has been very co-operative and given us permission to teach Licensed MD’s, APRN (Advance Practitioner Nurse), PA (Physician's Assistant) and LAs (License Acupuncturist). Alhumdulillah, we have already trained some medical professionals in CT and NY. And we are looking forward to training more medical professionals in Hijama, who can legally provide this sunnah treatment to the Ummah. To learn more about our courses; please click on the link:

We would like more Muslim medical professionals to come forward and train in Hijama, that way it is not illegal and all Muslims have access to it locally within the USA and Canada. It is imperative that US Muslims with Hijama knowledge and medical background are proactive and constructive, so we can meet the need for people who want to benefit from this treatment. We invite and welcome any support from fellow Hijama Therapists in the USA & Canada.

There is a massive demand for Hijama among muslims and non-muslims alike. Unfortunately, Hijama Nation cannot treat them. But at least they have been made aware of the fact that there is a divinely revealed therapy through our efforts. It is becoming very popular.

We tried to answer the concerns of Br/Sis Anonymous, but if there are still any concerns or questions, please contact us at info@HijamaNation.com . Don’t forget to visit our site to get the free eBook about the benefits of Hijama at http://HijamaTraining.com. Thank you and Jazakallah Khairan.

Hijama in Dubai, UAE

Hijama in Dubai, UAE

The following is a guest blog-post in the form of a written interview with Hamza Ali, a male cupping therapist in Dubai, UAE.

1.    Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?
My name is Hamza Ali and a mechanical engineer by profession. I am based in Dubai UAE and have been working in UAE for the past 19 years. I used to suffer from lower back pain (Muscle inflammation) from time to time. I came to know about the hijama treatment from one of my Syrian colleagues. Then I located a hijama therapist in Abu Dhabi and got my 1st hijama done by him. I got relief from the pain and stopped taking pain killers. Then I learnt the hijama therapy and procedure from the same person.
2.    What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialize / had the most experience in?
I specialize in treating back pain, Knee pain, Gout, frozen shoulder, general health, reducing Cholesterol and Hypertension.
3.    And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?
As per my experience Hijama therapy is highly beneficial in treating pains like back pain, knee pain, gout and also in reducing Cholesterol and hypertension.
4.    Do you have any interesting case-studies that you can briefly share with us from your hijama treatments?
The most recent case study is about a brother who was referred to me by Mr. Hassan Shami. The patient was having initial indications of Diabetes and above average Cholesterol. As per the requirements I did the cupping and we had used 6 cups on the back. The patient was also given a Tibbe-Nabawi diet and herbs. The results were very encouraging. The LDL, HDL and Triglycerides have all come under healthy averages. This case study is available on http://www.tibbenabwi.com also (Lipids, ALT/GPT with Hijamah ).

I am myself a case study for my back pain and knee pain. Even though I had Knee surgery done a few years a ago the pain had not gone and it was increasing day by day. I could not walk properly and was limping. Then I decided to do Hijama on my left knee. I used 4 cups around my knee. It is 45 days now and the knee is free of pain.
5.    Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)
In my opinion Cupping should be done regularly once in 3-4 months for general well-being. It removes the toxic blood from the body; it increases NO levels in the body which in turn increase vigor and vitality.
6.    As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?
 I get my hijama done once every 4 months. My wife is also trained in hijama and she does hijama for me.
7.    What is the overall prevalence of hijama therapy in your country at present?
 The overall prevalence of hijama therapy is good in UAE among local and expatriate Arabs. Very few (negligible) Indian and Pakistani expatriates know of hijama therapy and its benefits as this community forms a large component of expatriate community in UAE.
8.    Is it now available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?
Yes, hijama has been recognized by Ministry of health UAE and is available in a few private clinics as a form of treatment.
9.    Is there anything else you would like to add?
I would like to congratulate you for propagating this form of treatment which was preferred by our beloved Prophet (Peace be upon him). More work is needed to bring awareness for hijama among people as this is a safe, economical and strong treatment for a lot of diseases.
