Hijama and Tibb - e Nabbawi in Derby, England

The following is a guest blog-post by Umm Mohammed, a female Hijama Practitioner in Derby,
England

Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

I'm an academic and have been lecturing and researching on health and social care issues for the past
15 years at a national and international level. Throughout my career people of all faiths have mentioned the important role their faith has played in terms of their healing – even those people without a faith have said how they have turned to 'a higher source and prayed' in times of illness, worry or a crisis. As a Muslim I know our belief towards illness and disease and how we can use the tools and methods prescribed in the Sunnah to help us recover and get better; it is for this reason I became very interested in *Tibb-e-Nabbawi of which Hijama is one important aspect.

Having qualified as a Tabeeb I set up Al Nasiha Services – a community project – the aim of which is to help people focus on their health and wellbeing using Sunnah based treatments and remedies including hijama which is offered Fi Sabeel Allah.
*Tibb e Nabbawi or Prophetic medicine - is a divine gift given by Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala to Nabi Muhammad salallaho alaihe wasallam by wahi which He, salallaho alaihe wasallam gifted His ummah.  It’s a complete code of medicine for the heart; mind, body and soul – healing both the sick and healthy; the therapist and patient.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

People come to with various ailments – general aches and pains, backache, knee pain, rheumatism, arthritis, eczema, asthma, diabetes, cholesterol, fertility etc.. or simply for a general boost or detoxification. As a Tabeeb I prepare a treatment plan based on their symptoms and illness. This will include them focusing on their amal e salihaat and making changes to their lifestyle i.e. diet and exercise. It will also include hijama both wet and dry; and remedies prepared from natural herbs and oils. Hijama is performed according to the Sunnah. The number of sessions depends on the illness and their own Yaqeen and Tawwakkal on Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala for recovery.

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

The local community is becoming much more aware that hijama is part of their Islamic heritage and they have a right as a Muslim to seek cure from it. Alhamdulillah - the patients I treat respond well to it and tell me that they feel significantly better having had the treatment which is also complemented by the natural products that I recommend as part of their Tibb  e Nabbawi treatment plan.

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

I strongly believe in Hijama as a wasila for cure and am keen to revive this practise so that people are able to use it as preventative remedy in their own households at least once a year if not once a month. For my patients, I always recommend a minimum of 3 sessions - the maximum various depending on their treatment plan.

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

I have hijama once a month to detoxify and to give myself a general boost. I have it performed by a professionally qualified sister. I also perform hijama on all the members of my immediate family.

- What is the status and overall prevalence of hijama therapy in Derby/ England? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / Sunnah therapy?

Hijama is not offered on the NHS or any private medical clinic. There are several therapists who offer it privately. I am trying to raise its profile amongst health and social care professionals and clinicians. I feel people should have a choice and be able to choose hijama just like any other treatment  available on the NHS. I would like to see it part of the mainstream infrastructure and am working towards this goal. Insha’Allah.

In the meantime I am teaching it so that the local community can begin to benefit from it.   Insha’Allah.

Hijama at the Pain Relief Clinic in Gloucester, UK.

The following is a guest blog-post by Tahir Shaikh, a male Hijama Practitioner in Gloucester,
England

Hijama at the Pain Relief Clinic in Gloucester, UK. by Tahir Shaikh

- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is Tahir Shaikh and I run the Pain Relief Clinic in Gloucester, UK. We use a combination of skills on offer such as Osteopathy/Massage, Medical Acupuncture and Cupping Therapy to help with injuries, aches and pains. I was first made aware of Hijama thorough a patient who mentioned the benefits they received. I took an interest in cupping therapy as another form of treatment for my patients, and learnt that there are 2 types; Dry cupping (suction on skin to encourage circulation) and Wet Cupping (removal of dead blood cells and toxins)

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

We have dealt with alot of issues, ranging from ankle/leg pain to headaches/neck pain and other muscle/joint issues. The majority of our Hijama patients book in to revive the Arabic tradition of the Prophet (pbuh) and get the treatment that is recommended in holy scriptures. We have been asked alot regarding hair loss and weight loss with the use of Hijama, but presently we only offer treatment for health and injuries as opposed for cosmetic purposes.

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

One of the most successful experiences we have had at the clinic is when an elderly gentleman made a 2 hour trip to visit the clinic for Hijama treatment. We helped him though the door as he was limping, got him comfortable, took a thorough consultation and began the Hijama treatment personalised for him. He felt great after and was happy to walk out unaided! We have had some really good results within the community for low back / neck / shoulder pains, not just amongst the general public, but also for elite professional athletes.

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

Cupping is a great form of treatment to help the body heal by affecting the circulatory system, we recommend getting Hijama done atleast 4 times a year with the seasons (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) so the body is well prepared to deal with the pathogens that come with those seasons. If a patient has a problem we would recommend getting more regular treatment. Dry Cupping can be done every week depending on age and issues being dealt with.

- What is the status and overall prevalance of hijama therapy in Gloucester / England? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?

Hijama is something that not many people have heard of in Gloucester. Previously there have been therapists who came from various parts of England to treat those who are aware of it. One of the aims of the clinic is to raise awareness of this forgotten tradition, and to show people how beneficial it can be once they are willing to put their trust in it. We appreciate many people can be sceptical when ‘removing blood’ is mentioned, but we are fully trained and provide a safe, professional experience.

Hejama in Sydney, Australia

The following is a guest blog-post by Safia Marabani, a female Hijama Practitioner in Sydney, Australia

Hejama in Sydney, Australia by Safia Marabani

Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is Safia Marabani, I am 26 years old. I have completed a degree in Traditional Chinese medicine specialising in Acupuncture, herbal medicine, remedial massage, dry cupping and wet cupping therapy referred to as "Hijama" in Prophetic medicine. From a very young age I always had a passion for healthy eating and living a healthy lifestyle, I am also very passionate about helping people so I decided to choose a career in the health industry and did some research on Chinese medicine and decided that it was exactly what I was looking for. After completing my degree I became interested in prophetic medicine as many of the concepts and theories of Chinese medicine were similar to Islamic medicine. I was especially interested in hejama therapy. At university we touched base with cupping therapy but it was mainly the dry cupping that was used and only a few practitioners practised wet cupping. A particular hadith that I came across during the course of my studies, which really encouraged me to pursue Hejama as a treatment option for my patients is related as follows:

Abdullah Ibn Abbas reported that the messenger of Allah swt stated: “I did not pass an angel on the night of the journey except that they all said to me. Upon you is cupping O Muhammad.” (Sahih Sunan Ibn Majah 3477).

The above hadith demonstrates that surely, there must be wisdom behind the Angels recommending Prophet Muhammad to perform Hejama and recommend it to his companions. It was a treatment that was recommended by the purest of God’s creations and especially on one of the greatest nights of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) life- Isra Wal Miraj. It was at that moment that I decided to incorporate hejama is a treatment option for my patients.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

I do a great deal of work with patients who suffer with chronic pain, back pain, disc injuries, sciatica, headaches, migraines, low energy levels, digestive disorders, infertility, IVF support programs, weight loss programs, skin conditions, allergies, menstrual disorders such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, labour inducing therapy, baby massages, pregnancy massage. These are some of the conditions I treat using a combination of Hejama therapy, acupuncture, herbal medicine and remedial massage.

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

Majority of the time I get a very positive response and in many cases when dealing with "pain" many patient's feel a difference instantly. When treating chronic conditions such as digestive disorders, menstrual conditions and infertility the treatment may take a little longer but there is always positive feedback after the therapy. It also depends on the individual and how well their body responds to the treatment. I have had some great success stories especially in cases of Infertility were a few patient's fell pregnant a few weeks after the Hejama treatment. Chronic headache patient's also respond very positively and in some cases migraines/headaches have completely eased off after just one treatment. Sciatica patients also get very positive results from just one treatment.

- Do you have any interesting case-studies that you can briefly share with us from your hijama treatments?

I have a few testimonials and interesting cases from patients that I have mentioned in my hejama
article. Some of these include:

“My husband and I have been trying to conceive naturally but after many failed attempts we came to terms with the fact that we were unable to conceive naturally, so we began exploring different options such as IVF. Our IVF treatments were successful and we had two healthy children. At the beginning of 2013, I decided to do hejama, as I heard some really positive feedback from family and friends. 1 month after my hejama treatment I fell pregnant naturally. My husband and I were ecstatic and I am so happy and recommend hejama to every couple who are experiencing fertility issues.”

“I have been experiencing menstrual problems for many years, the gynecologist diagnosed me with hormonal imbalance, polycystic ovarian syndrome and recommended me to go on the contraceptive pill at the age of 17. I couldn’t remember the last time I got my periods naturally. I was encouraged to do hejama to help balance my hormone levels and regulate my periods. After a few hejama treatments, I have stopped the contraceptive pill and now have a regular natural cycle, my hormone levels are balanced and I feel wonderful.”

“When I perform hejama treatment, immediately after my blood pressure reduces.”

“I have been suffering with chronic migraines for 20 years; I have tried everything from conventional medicine to massage, physiotherapy, chiropractic therapy and many other treatments but nothing helped. After my hejama treatments my migraines disappeared. I was amazed with the results and recommend it to all my friends and family. I can finally say, I am migraine free.”

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

I would recommend everyone to have hejama done at least once a year even if you don't have any health issues just to detox and cleanse the blood. Recommeding my patients to do hejama would vary from patient to patient. For example, if I see that a patient has a lot of toxicity, dark clotting and it's a chronic condition I would usually recommend that they do hejama once a month over 3 consecutive months and if there condition improves then to do it once every 3-6 months depending on their condition. I generally catergarise  patients into 3 groups:

Group one: High levels of toxicity, this would be due to the colouring of the skin being a very dark red/purple with a lot of dark blood clots dark red-black colouring. I would recommend these patients to do hejama once a month over 3 consecutive months until the circulation improves. I would also put them on a detox to cleanse the liver and organs during this 3 month period.

Group two: These patients would have a medium range of toxicity according to the colouring of the skin which is normally a dark red with a few blood clots. Most people fall under this category.

Group three: Patients who have good blood circulation.

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

I get Hejama done once every 6 months as I am very regular with exercise and healthy eating so Hamdulillah my circulation is good. I see a friend of mine who is also a Chinese medicine practitioner.

- What is the status and overall prevalance of hijama therapy in Australia? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?

Hejama has become very popular in the past 2 years definitely a growing industry in Australia. It is not offered in any hospitals however it is offered in some clinics. Compared to other states in Australia, Hejama is most popular in Sydney.

- Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located and what services do you offer?

Our clinic is located in the greater western suburbs in Sydney. The services include:

Physiotherapy
Chiropractic
Hejama therapy both a male and a female therapist
Chinese medicine
Acupuncture
Remedial Massage

Hijama in Islamabad, Pakistan

The following is a guest blog-post by Dr Sohail Qureshi, a male Hijama Practitioner in Islamabad, Pakistan

Hijama in Islamabad, Pakistan by Dr Sohail Qureshi of Islamabad Hijama Health Clinic

Q-Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is Dr.Sohail Qureshi. By trade I am a Dental Surgeon. I was still in Medical Academy in my 3rd year when I was first introduced to Blood Letting. This too in Russia, the least of places where one would think of such treatment methods existing.

Basically, we were told by our Professors that Leech Therapy had been proven to have cured various forms of cancer. So we started to treat patients who had been diagnosed with Cancer using Leeches, those little creepy slimy blood suckers. (Just to point out, we used "Virgin Leeches" or also known as Pharmaceutical bred Leeches, which were single use and after treatment they were killed off by placing them in a solution of Ethyl-Alcohol or sometimes in a drink of Vodka)

All this was back in 2001.

For the next 4 years, I had no idea that the process that I was performing on myself and others was in fact a Sunnah, as there is a Hadith that mentions Leeches also.

It was only in 2005 when a Somalian Patient came for some Dental treatment, when I was in the UK, that she mentioned Hijama and how it being a Sunnah, that I was left shocked by the news, of this Method being an important part of our Religion!

Since then, I have never looked back and went from using Leeches to using the Traditional Cupping Method, in which cups are used with the help of a suction pump.

Q- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

The question of a Hijama Therapist specializing in any illness in my humble opinion is rather invalid. Hijama is a method which covers nearly all illnesses and is not like allopathic methodology where a certain medic can study a specific area of the body to become a master of that illness.

As for my personal experience, I need a moment to think. Having treated more than 10,000 patients in the last 3 years of living in Pakistan, I would like to put 2 subcategories to this answer.

1. Medical Illnesses: Patients who were cured which come to the top of my mind are those who were suffering from arthritis, skin diseases, allergies, general aches and pains. These are just some of the conditions that were successfully treated

Paranormal or Metaphysical Illnesses: These type of patients were suffering from unexplained problems which even medical doctors could not diagnose. The results from all the tests were clear but still the patient was in a terrible state. When treated with Hijama, it turned out that it was not a medical condition but rather a phenomena called Jinn Possession. 9 out of 10 Jinn cases were successfully treated, though I must say this is the most difficult of all cases to cure.

Q- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

The very common question I get asked by my patients is that how well do other patients respond to Hijama Therapy. In all honesty, this is a pretty difficult question to answer. Let me try to explain.
You see, Hijama is not like Antibiotics where you take a pill every few hours for a few days and you know that symptoms begin to disappear towards the end. In Hijama, because it is the removal of a certain amount of blood from a certain amount of points on the body, the results vary.

I have had certain patients who were complaining of chronic pain in knees, to the point that they were almost unable to walk, and after ONE SINGLE Hijama session, they not only were able to walk again without any pain, but its been a good 3 years now and they have not taken any pain killers.
Having said that, I have had another patient of same sex and similar age with the exact same problem of the knees, and it took them 7-8 Hijama sessions with one session per month.
So as you can see, 2 patients with similar problems but one got cured by a single treatment while the other had to do it for 8 months.

But as a direct answer to your question, nearly all diseases are curable by Hijama. This I say with confidence because the Ahadith of Prophet Muhammad PBUH: "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease."
[Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

As for specific illnesses that were cured through Hijama, I could say that they were:
  • All aches and Pains
  • Allergies
  •  Skin Conditions
  • Mental and Psychiatric illnesses
  • Cardiac problems
  • Asthma

I would also like to mention, that Hijama is not a fix for every issue. Diseases that cannot be treated by Cupping Therapy include:

Congenital (present at birth) and genetic diseases like down syndrome, cerebral palsy, cleft lip, hole-in-heart, congenital dislocation of the hip.

Trauma and accidents, broken bones and joints, open wound, torn muscles, tissue and organ damage, internal bleeding, and excessive bleeding cannot be treated and cured with Hijama.

However Cupping Therapy can promote quicker recovery or healing of these conditions due to improved blood circulation.

Q-  Do you have any interesting case-studies that you can briefly share with us from your hijama treatments?

I have loads and loads of very interesting case studies, but this one cannot leave my mind. A female in her 20's presented to me 3 months ago with a complaint of a chronic cough and with the cough she coughed up about 50-100 ml of blood a few times a day.

Though this type of condition is more widely known as Hemoptysis, the actual problem was not diagnosed by the many many many Specialists that she was taken to.

After 3 years of coughing up blood most of the day and night, she was told by the medical specialists that she had a very rare type of allergy, which apparently only 20 such cases exist in the world.

So, for 3 years this patient had lost all normality in her life, lost weight and also greatly affected her social life which in turn possibly triggered a depressive episode.

After going through her medical reports, all her tests were negative for Tuberculosis, Pneumonia, Cancer Etc, I was also not sure what I was looking at, as this was also something that I had heard for the first time.

So I recited Bismillah, and went ahead with the treatment. I chose 10 specific points on the body and performed with great care the Cupping Process.

The first time I did the suction, the Operative Points were bleeding heavily, but on the second and third round, it was more normalized and fresh clotted blood was observed.

Now, 3 months later, I went to the patient’s home last night. Personally I had no idea what to expect.

To my surprise, the parents of the young lady told me that since that day when she had Cupping Therapy done, she has NOT BLED A SINGLE TIME!!!

Then I met the patient and we talked for a good half an hour, and noticed she was not coughing nor having any asthma like symptoms.

Her facial appearance was much full and did not look worn out and exhausted.

Not only were the family very thankful for the help but also I was very thankful to Allah swt for the Shifa and blessing on this patient and also I was given the chance to change the life of a young lady who was not able to lead a normal life.

I ask Allah swt for Good Health for all of us, Ameen, as Good Health is a Blessing from Lord Almighty!

Q- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

Hijama as Preventative Measures is one of my favorite rules. I like this rule because if this is practiced when a person is young and healthy, it means that down the line, say when he/she is in the 50s or 60s, they wont suffer any serious ill health like most of the old aged people in this day and age do.

As for the time duration for general well health or detox of the body, I have a personal rule which I like to mention to my patients. If you are fit and healthy and have not had Hijama done prior, than it would be a good idea to have it done every 3 months for the first year. Thereafter, it can be done every 6 months or so. Even once a year can do.

But, if someone is suffering from any ill health, depending on the illness, I suggest that it should be done every month for 3 months and thereafter it should be done every 4 months for the first year. Thereafter,  it should be done every 6 months.

Q- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

As a Hijama Practitioner, I tend to get it done on average every 3 months. However, if I get patients who needed Hijama for Jinn Possession, then in that case I have to do have it done ASAP. The best way to explain this is that having treated someone with any metaphysical condition, then it is possible and very likely that I get affected by that metaphysical condition. So to get rid of any of its effects from my body and soul, I need to have Hijama done on myself, especially on top of the head.
As there aren’t any professional Hijama Therapists available in Pakistan that I can happily go to, I decided that it would be best if I trained a family member, who then does all my Hijama points on me for me.

Q- What is the status and overall prevalence of hijama therapy in Pakistan? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?

I have noticed a general revival of Hijama Therapy since shifting back to Pakistan. It is getting more and more common in almost all the major cities of Pakistan which is a good thing but it also gives me nightmares. Problem is that learning Hijama is such an easy thing to do. Watch a couple of Youtube videos and then you become a Hijama Specialist like many people claim and write on their clinics. I have been doing this for almost 13 years now and I still consider myself a layman. I dare not call myself a specialist as this term is best suited for those who are doing this through generations. Those specialists have accumulated nearly a million patients and who know the fine detail of Hijama which one cannot learn through books alone.

Yet, when I come across clinics, they all are unquestionable masters of Hijama. When I ask them about their level of hygiene, I get threatened with police arrest and at one point was called a kafir or infidel even because I asked them if they used the 1 Hijama pump that was present in the clinic on every single patient or if patients all got their own pumps.

Hospitals don’t believe in Hijama. This is a sad state of affairs. I went to a few of the large, highly profiled Hospitals here in Islamabad. After explaining to them what Hijama was and how it would help the Hospitals own patients, they simply said that I was going to spoil their business by treating patients instead of giving patients medicines. So Hospitals in reality, don’t want this technology as it will cure patients and they need sick patients to come again and again to rip them of their money.

The same applies to private clinics. I have lost most of my Doctor friends simply because they say that by treating and curing a single patient in my clinic means that they lose one prescription. Apparently, they get paid commission for prescribing drugs to patients, so no patients means no commission.

I am trying to make this official. I am trying to get the Pakistan Medical and Dental Counsel to get Hijama officially recognized so that if anyone wishes to practice Hijama, it should be done after getting registered. Registration will include a basic exam or test to determine how well the therapist is aware of the risks involved in Hijama when it comes to prevention of cross-infection and if they are capable of such a sensitive task, they may get licensed. This is and will be more safer for the public as a whole and will ensure that quacks won’t be able to run Hijama clinics labeling themselves as Specialists.

Q- Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located and what services do you offer?
