Cupping (Hijama) In Its Time Is A Cure For Every Disease

Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

The Best Days For Cupping (Hijama)

Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach* is best. It increases the intellect and improves the memory. It improves the memory of the one memorising. So whoever is going to be cupped then on a Thursday in the name of Allaah. Keep away from being cupped on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be cupped on a Monday or Tuesday. Do not be cupped on a Wednesday because it is the day that Ayoub was befallen with the trial. You will not find leprosy except (by being cupped) on Wednesday or Wednesday night." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3488)].

* 'alaa ar-reeq in Arabic means to fast until after being treated with cupping. Once the treatment of cupping has been completed, one may eat and drink.

As for the Islamic day and night, the night enters before the day. So at sunset on Tuesday, Wednesday night comes in. Cupping (hijama) is best performed during the daytime between the athaan of fajr and the athaan of maghrib because yawm in arabic means daytime.

Cupping (Hijama) Is A Preventative Medicine

Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever wants to perform cupping (hijama) then let him search for the 17th, 19th and 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) and let none of you allow his blood to rage (boil) such that it kills him." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3486)].

Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "When the weather becomes extremely hot, seek aid in cupping (hijama). Do not allow your blood to rage (boil) such that it kills you." [Reported by Hakim in his 'Mustadrak' and he authenticated it and Imam ad-Dhahabi agreed (4/212)].

The Sunnah days for cupping (hijama) every month are when the 17th or 19th or 21st of the lunar month coincide with a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. These are the best and most beneficial days for cupping (hijama). If one is not able to be cupped on 17th, 19th or 21st (coinciding with Monday, Tuesday or Thursday) then any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday of the month.

Dry and massage cupping may be performed at any time.

We pray you find this information helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries, comments or feedback.

JazakAllah khair for your support.

The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever revives a Sunnah from my Sunnah and the people practise it, will have the same reward of those who practise it without their reward diminishing…" [Sunan ibn Maajah (209)].

JazakAllah khair.

Hijama in Sri Lanka - by Imran Razeek

Hijama in Colombo, Sri Lanka - by Imran Razeek

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Imran Razeek - a male cupping therapist based in Colombo, Sri Lanka

- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is Imran Razeek, currently residing in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I am a lecturer in Chemistry, teaching Chemistry for London O/L & A/L Examinations. Myself & my wife got Hijama treatment from Dr. Noordeen Yousuf of Thailand on his visit to Sri Lanka. I was suffering with chronic migraine for 15 years & my wife was suffering from cervical spondylosis. Alhamdulilah with Allah's permission, we got instant relief & gradual cure after Hijamah.

Since then we wanted to learn & awaken this great sunnah among the laymen. My wife & I learned the art of Hijama from Dr. Noordeen. We got training under the doctor for nearly one month & handled more than 300 patients during the training period Alhamdullilah.

Since then we have been practicing this great missing therapy among our friends, relatives & family. But now I conduct free Hijama sessions at our local masjid once/twice a week for the general public. And my wife conducts sessions at home.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

Alhamdullilah I have seen great improvements in my patients specially with joint pains, lower back pain, body pains, headaches, sinusitis, Gastritis, Varicose veins, cervical spondylosis etc.

I also have handled patients with paralysis, Neuro fibro metosis, Skin rashes, Diabetes, Cholesterol, Trigger finger, Hypertension, poor vision, Infertility, wheezing, Addiction, Haemorrhoid, Speech difficulty, poor memory, Heel pain, Lymphoedema, Laryngitis, Elephantitis, Mental Disorder, Poisoning due to animal bites, carpal tunnel syndrome.

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

Migraine, Joint pains, Back pain, sinusitis, Gastritis, Throat infection, Varicose veins, cervical spondylosis, Poisoning due to animal bites, carpal tunnel syndrome.

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy (which by getting rid of bad blood/ toxins in the body may help prevent conditions like high cholesterol/ heart disease / cancer in the long term)? And how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

As a general preventive therapy I recommend cupping to be done once a month/3 months on the sunnah days of 17th, 19th & 21st of the lunar month, as per the hadith: Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

Once a month on the 17th/19th/21st of the lunar month. My wife does it for me.

- As a non-Muslim country with a significant Muslim population, what is the overall prevalence of hijama therapy in Sri Lanka? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?

Most of the people are unaware about Hijama. It is not available in hospitals. But some Muslim doctors do practice in their clinics but its not very common.

Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located in Colombo?

At the moment I do not have a clinic, I conduct sessions at my residence & at our masjid in Colombo.

Residence : 33/2B, Ambagahawatte Road, Off Temple Road, Kalubowila, Dehiwela, (opposite Kalubowila Teaching Hospital)

Masjid: 300, Hospital Road, Kalubowila, Dehiwela.

Cupping: A Prophetic Therapy By Dr. Sahbaa M Bondok

The following article is reproduced and adapted from http://www.islamonline.net with the kind permission of the author.

Cupping: A Prophetic Therapy By Dr. Sahbaa M Bondok, a Physician and Writer in Egypt and Author of "Cupping Therapy The Ancient Art of Healing"

Almighty Allah has sent the Qur'an as a book of guidance and a book of revelation, it is not originally a book of science, yet within its pages you would find numerous ayahs which have scientific bases. Allah has sent these ayahs as a proof of the Quran's Divine nature and as a challenge to the opposing people. Similarly Prophet Muhammad was not a scientist or a physician yet his words would carry a lot of scientific and medical signs that prove his truthfulness and prophethood.

The great Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) recommended the use of cupping in about 28 hadiths. According to a hadith narrated by Anas Ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says, “Cupping is the most helpful act for human beings to cure themselves.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

And,

"Healing lies in three things: A gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire (cauterizing), but I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with fire." (Al-Bukhari)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used cupping on his honorable head for migraine and on his honorable hip joint, back of the neck, lateral sides of the neck and between shoulders.

Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was treated with cupping, and he paid the cupper his fee.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Hijama or cupping is one of the therapies that has become increasingly available to the public. It is an ancient art of healing, which is still being practiced in many rural areas exactly as it was practiced thousands of years ago.

Therapeutic effects of Hijama had been rediscovered in the twentieth century and its popularity has seen great renaissance. Hence, this age-old technique serves both public and scientific communities. It is just now gaining publicity in the Western World and United States.

In Germany, between 1987 and 1992, many patients, 32 to 64%, with chronic polyarthritis had tried Hijama as one of the unconventional procedures for treatment. Moreover, 60% of medical schools in the U.S.A have begun teaching Hijama as a part of Complementary Medicine (CM). Bloodletting is also being practiced at Harvard Medical School and Johns Hopkins Medical Center, two of the most prestigious medical centers in the world.

What is really surprising is the fact that Hijama is one of the most famous medical prophetic recommendations!!

Both he (peace and blessings be upon him ) and his companions performed Hijama.

Ibn `Abbas said: "The Prophet was cupped on his head for an ailment he was suffering from while he was in a state of ihram, at a water place called Lahl Jamal." Ibn 'Abbas added: "Allah's prophet was cupped on his head for migraine headache while he was in a state of ihram." (Al-Bukhari)

And Jabir bin 'Abdullah paid Al-Muqanna a visit during his illness and said, "I will not leave till he gets cupped, for I heard Allah's Prophet say, "There is healing in cupping." (Al-Bukhari)

What is Hijama?

Hijama is a treatment that stimulates specific points on the body by creating a vacuum in a suction cup placed at various points on the body leading to an increase in the flow of blood in this area. This is thought to draw out harmful excess blood from diseased organs nearby and so promote healing. When Hijama is combined with bloodletting this is called "Wet Hijama” or “bloodletting cupping". In “Wet Hijama ” the skin is previously cut, so that blood would actually ooze into the cup where it could be removed.

Hijama in Old Practice

Originally "Bloodletting" (phlebotomy or Al-fasd in Arabic) was only referred to in cases of polycythemia, a condition where due to the rapid formation of blood cells, it is medically warranted to bleed or reduce the amount of the patient’s blood volume. But due to its simplicity and its therapeutic effects, the applications of Hijama were endless. It was used to drain blood and pus from abscess and for sucking blood from poisoned wounds, poisonous snakebites, and boils. Later on, since this therapy is simple and its therapeutic effect is good, the range of indications has been expanded to cover problems in the internal organs.

The publications of old physicians corroborate the ability of Hijama to speed up healing of many diseases. It has been used successfully to help in treatment of some illnesses belonging to internal medicine, such as, lung infections, pulmonary tuberculosis, abdominal pain, stomachache, digestive problems, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, hypertension, common cold, dysmenorrhea (painful menses), swelling and pain in the eye. It was also used to treat painful joints, muscular spasms, particularly in chronic low back pain, numbness of the skin, and many other pain conditions.

Many Hijama practitioners have reported that the most important mode of action in Hijama is to get the blood to move. Therefore, it was used particularly for conditions of blood stagnation, poor circulation, cough, and asthmatic conditions.

Hijama in Modern Medicine

Although the mode of action of Hijama is still under investigation, practically speaking -on the therapeutic level- it has proven to be a remarkable success in many fields such as:

Hijama for pain control. Qingdao and Guying had reported that shallow puncture and Hijama are very satisfactory in treatment of pain and may yield distinct analgesic effect. The ratio of curative effect was 97.12%.

Headache and migraine. Duo has treated 100 cases of intractable migraine by acupuncture and Hijama. Seung an experienced Korean medical doctor recorded that insertion-bloodletting therapy is an effective treatment for headaches. Bleeding up to 100 ml of blood can be helpful in treating hypertension, one of the commonest causes of headache.

Rheumatic diseases. The following rheumatic disorders, when treated by Hijama either improve or come to healing successfully after just a few sessions: arthritis, low-back pain, muscular Fibrosis, spondylosis and chronic fatigue syndrome

Common colds and influenza. Folklore remedies and oral traditions in many cultures do certainly include Hijama as their main treatment for common colds. Dispelling cold is one of the traditional indications for Hijama. It is interesting to note that as the barbers in the early twentieth century created window signs advertising "Cups for Colds". Hong reported good results following the application of sliding Hijama (a type of cupping) for 250 patients with common colds.

Chest diseases. He et al had reported that treatment of cases with bronchial asthma using acupuncture plus Hijama lead to an immediate relief and improvement in pulmonary function. In some cultures the technique is also used on the back to treat asthma in children.

Dermatologic diseases. In 1993, Chen had reported treatment of acne by puncturing acupoint in combination with Hijama. Examples of dermatologic conditions, when treated by Hijama, either improve or come to healing successfully are: boils or abscess, herpes zoster, acne, cellulite, and urticaria.

Psychological diseases. There are also reports of using Hijama in conjugation with mental sedatives to treat schizophrenia. This method had a reported success rate of 91.68%. It is also employed to ease depression.

Faith and Science; the Ultimate Integration

Modern scientific knowledge therefore allows us to understand certain hadiths in the light of science, which until a recent time, have been impossible to interpret. This proves that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), hasn’t talked being driven by his feelings, as this was only a revelation sent down and none other than the Divine could have produced the Holy Sunnah.

What is initially striking is the complete agreement of the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with modern scientific data and yet it is unthinkable that a man from Muhammad’s time could have been the author of them.

He (peace and blessings be upon him ) was neither a physician nor a scientist, as he was an illiterate person, but an envoy who received and transmitted Allah's Message and revelations.

Almighty Allah says,

(And thou (O Muhammad) wast not a reader of any scripture before it, nor didst thou write it with thy right hand, for then might those have doubted, who follow falsehood. But it is clear revelations in the hearts of those who have been given knowledge, and none deny Our revelations save wrong-doers.) (Al-`Ankabut 29: 48,49)

Hijama in Pakistan - by Usman Baloch

"Hijama in Lahore, Pakistan" - by Usman Baloch

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Usman Baloch - a male cupping therapist based in Lahore, Pakistan.

- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is USMAN MUEEN UD DIN BALOCH, I did my MS in Computer Science in 2000 and did my masters in commerce from Punjab University Lahore and then started my career as CONSULTANT OF TAXATION in my father’s firm which in his business for over 35 years now, I had an interest in alternative medicine as my grandfather was a famous "HAKEEM" (herbalist) in his area and forefathers were also from the same field and my uncle is still in this field. After studying so much in hadith books about hijama, for example I found over 300 hadith in 7-8 books of sunnah of the prophet, I started looking for this knowledge around the country. I travelled to villages, towns, cities, and found many persons who know / or were practicing this (most of them are dead at the time of writing this on 1/10/2009).

I come across a person named “Hakeem Ghias ud Din“ from India who is running 2 hospitals in Delhi, India, and this is their family business. In early 2003 I treated my first patient of acute skin diseases and that person slept just after 30 minutes of his 1st treatment after many weeks and months of insomnia. Then till today I am learning hijamah and fasd and practicing in villages, towns, cities and so far I have dealt with hundreds and hundreds of patients alhumdulillah

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

All kind of pains from head to toe, in arms, shoulders, neck , backbone, legs, feet, heels. I have most success in pain relief alhumdulillah, and I have experienced very few patients who show very little recovery and that is just because they did not repeat the treatment a third time, but most of the patients experience relief in a very short period of time specially patients who were unable to get relief with pain killers they get relief in just 1 or 2 treatments and they stop taking medicine after 2nd treatment usually.

Reduction of weight without being hungry all the time is one major thing many of my patients reduce 20kg of body weight in one month and much from their thighs, belly and backside.

Sleep problem is another major thing that gets relief, usually patients who complain that they have no sleep even after taking pills usually have sound sleep with out any pills.

High blood pressure and diabetic patients stop taking all kind of medicine after getting treatment and they are living a healthy life now.

Addiction is another thing, I have one addict patient who was taking 15-18 injection of biprofeen every day for his addiction along with some sleeping pills for over many years, he came to me on 15/9/2009 and in just 16 days he is no more an addict. He so far had about 10 treatments and with controlled diet, he is having normal sleep and doing exercise now, and I hope this becomes a great success story for the treatment of addicts in the world.

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

Hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, cancer, diabetes, skin diseases, arthritis, Alzheimer, migraine, back pain, all kinds either it is related to disks or just heaviness, IBS, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, eye infection, throat infection, ear infection, muscle aches and pain, addiction

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy (which by getting rid of bad blood/ toxins in the body may help prevent conditions like high cholesterol/ heart disease / cancer in the long term)? And how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

Someone from UK asked me "do you get hijamah for yourself?" I said: "I don’t find a second person around who get this much treatments of hijamah and fasd like me, and I am very happy, healthy person since I am getting hijamah treatment, and person who once get treatment from me for any diseases never need to go to a doctor for some sickness except flu or fever, he would just come back to me for treatment whenever he needed it.

Yes I prefer it for myself on every 17, 19 or 21 of every lunar month but some time I miss one or two of these dates, so recommend for everyone to get one treatment on any of these days as a general prevention and getting rid of bad blood /toxins from the body, this help many conditions of heaviness in head and legs and back, where the patients can not give any name to it or nothing bad comes in lab test results they recover in just one or 2 treatments of hijamah or fasd (whichever is needed)

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

As mentioned above I get it done every 17, 19 or 21 of every lunar month from students or my elder brother who is always with me and helps me with patients

- As a Muslim country, what is the overall prevalance of hijama therapy in Pakistan? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy ?

As a Muslim country , people don’t resist to hijama but as they don’t know about Islam or hijamah hadith they feel weird at first, you have to convince them and now the point come for me that patients bring other patients from their family and friends and convince them before they bring them to me, or patients who are tired of having too much medicine tablets and injections from doctors and no results, they see themselves the results of my patients and they come to me convinced.

But yes it is not available in hospitals or clinics, I am the first person who is doing this as a profession in this decade and I have established clinics and many persons who are practicing alternative medicine in the country now willing to learn and practice hijamah and few are actually now practicing in different cities

- Whereabouts is your clinic located in Lahore?
Al hijamah Center located:
1. Opposite Shahnai Marriage Hall, Main Road Gulshane Ravi, Lahore, Pakistan
2. Dera Usman Kulachi , 139 Tda , Ada 5 mile Layyah , Punjab Pakistan

I visit many clinics of hakeem and alternative medicine professionals when they invite me and gather their patients usually once in a month.
