Hijama in Bolton, England by Darul Hijama Cupping Therapy Clinic

Hijama in Bolton, England by Darul Hijama Cupping Therapy Clinic

The following is a guest blog-post in the form of a written interview with Sabina Patel, a female cupping therapist from Bolton, England

- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is Sabina. The Hijama subject was addressed through a family friend few years back. Alhumdulillah having done Islamic studies (Alima), I had already heard of the practice but wasn't sure if it was practiced in the UK. This encouraged me to learn more. I started doing a lot of research. To know that you can help someone through a Sunnah was very pleasing to the heart therefore I decided to complete the course on hijama. I studied very close with  a Unani herbalist and hijama practitioner with many years of experience. I completed a thorough course in UK covering and incorporating health & lifestyle, anatomy, science, history, Islamic medicine, holistic/alternative medicine & much more, exactly what I wanted. 2 years on, I have Alhumdulillah cupped over hundreds of patients throughout the country by doing mobile cupping and now Alhumdulillah opened my first hijama clinic in Bolton - Darul Hijama Cupping Therapy.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

Hijama treats almost any condition however the most common illness I have dealt with is backaches, migraine, blood pressure, diabetes, sciatica, infertility, mental health issues, poor blood circulation and some come just to revive the sunnah (general health & wellbeing)

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

Yes most definitely, cupping has been used successfully for numerous diseases. The drawing of toxins from the body instantly helps the body regain its energy and stability. Hijama is not just a reactionary medicine for a disease, it is actually a preventative measure that prevents diseases. Hijama helps to remove impurities and stimulates the bone marrow to produce new, healthier blood. It cleanses on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level and leaves the patient feeling refreshed and energized.

- Do you have any interesting case-studies that you can briefly share with us from your hijama treatments?

I had been asked to perform cupping on a patient with Hepatitis C - alhumdulillah, after a few sessions throughout the year, she had her last blood tests done few weeks back and came back all clear! Amazing subhanAllah

Also patients who suffer from migraines, instant relief for a lot of them and majority have had no migraines since the end of their treatment.

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

Its an excellent body cleanser. once a month for the first three months if the health issue needs more attention. For general health and wellbeing, every four to six months would be fine, more than this would cause no harm.

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

I am always on the go, so I do have hijama done every 6 -8 weeks. This keeps me on my toes, more relaxed, feeling fresh and rejuvenated. I have another female practitioner to perform my cupping, if she is unavailable then my husband gets the go ahead! He's finished his course too so Alhumdulillah I have nothing to worry about.

- Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located and what services do you offer?

Male and female practitoner available at the clinic - both qualified & certified

We offer

*Wet cupping(hijama)

*dry cupping

*massage cupping

*circumcision clinic held fortnightly at the premises by a UK registered GP with many years of experience.

Essay: "Observations of the popularity and religious significance of blood-cupping (al-ḥijāma) as an Islamic medicine"

"Observations of the popularity and religious significance of blood-cupping (al-ḥijāma) as an Islamic medicine" - by Ahmed El-Wakil

The following is a blog-post in the form of a written interview with Ahmed El-Wakil, an independent researcher based in Qatar, who has written an essay on the subject of Hijama, the download link for which is given below.

Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up getting involved with studying / researching hijama?
I have been interested in alternative medicine for a long time, especially in energy medicine. I have tried a number of complementary therapies. I was first introduced to hijama when I was in Lebanon in 2005, through a sheikh who recommended it to me. The gentleman who administered hijama on me did it the traditional way using a glass cup and fire. From that point onwards, I slowly began to take a greater interest in hijama.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions have you researched with regards to treatment with hijama/ wet-cupping?
My initial interest in alternative medicine and hijama was to improve my own health. I did not research hijama for a particular illness. Islamic history has had its own dynamics when it comes to energy medicine in the form of Qur'anic healing. It was the relationship that exists between hijama and energy medicine that caught my attention the most.

- Please explain briefly how your study carried out? If applicable, how many patients took part and how long did it take?

I am not a practitioner myself but I did have the chance to speak to practitioners who literally have had exposure to thousands of cases. Although I did not experience significant benefits following my experience in Lebanon I thought I would try hijama again, but this time in Egypt. I asked for the name of a practitioner, and I was referred to Captain Hamdy Abdullah Al-Sayed. I was struck the first time he practised hijama on me. Captain Hamdy used customized glass cups and a suction pump to position the cups all over my body in a manner that is similar to acupuncture - which of course would not be possible with fire cupping. I had tried acupuncture before but the beneficial effects I felt from hijama were far more powerful. Acupuncture works on the body's energy system - and so does hijama. I was then introduced to Ahmed Hefny and met with him a number of times. I also purchased all the books he had in his shop about hijama, including the manual that he wrote. Captain Hamdy and Ahmed Hefny know each other well. I heard many stories about the effectiveness of hijama from the both of them as well as from others. Unfortunately the stories about the benefits of hijama are mostly clinically classified as anecdotal.

- What was the outcome/conclusion of the study?
I sincerely believe that hijama does have therapeutic benefits. However it is essential to determine the extent to which hijama can cure disease and for what ailments it is most effective. This of course requires further research.

 - Are you planning any other hijama-related studies in the near future?
I believe that peer-reviewed studies need to be carried out so that hijama and other complementary therapies transition from being perceived as helpful at an anecdotal level to scientifically proven therapies.

 - If you have hijama done yourself, how often do you get it done, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

I did it mostly for migraines. I rely on Captain Hamdy who kindly comes to our home in Cairo to do it on me! I used to have it done once a month, sometimes even twice a month in the initial stages when I felt my body needed it. Now I maybe do it once every 6 months.

- Is there anything else you would like to add?

Hijama needs to be integrated with other research that has been done in the field of alternative medicine. The sad and recent death of author Andreas Moritz who wrote many books such as "Timeless Secrets of Health and Rejuvination" and "The Amazing Liver and Gallbladder Flush" argued that we need to detoxify the body to regain full health. Moritz wrote extensively about cleansing the major organs in the body: the colon, the liver and the kidneys. I have also recently read a book entitled "The One Minute Cure" by Madison Cavanaugh which mentions the benefits of hydrogen peroxide for detoxification and to keep the blood clean and oxygenated. Hijama seems to fit in with these alternative therapies in that it detoxifies the body and keeps the blood oxygenated. Islamic Tradition has always been open to integrating knowledge from other traditions for the benefit of humanity. The Muslim world should perhaps establish its own professional alternative medicine training centres with research facilitites that can take an objective view to traditional Islamic medicine and to determine how these can be best utilized - beyond popular charlatanism and ad-hoc anecdotal cases - to benefit our brothers and sisters in humanity who are suffering from disease.  I do hope that one day we can see a definitive practitioner's guide and reference book on hijama, but for this to happen we need collaboration between hijama practitioners, medical doctors, educational and research establishments and to secure sources of funding. I am very impressed by brother Shuaib Suria's online initiative at www.ahealth.co.uk to promote hijama which I believe is an important step in the right direction.

 - Finally where can readers obtain or purchase your above research paper from?

The Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Journals (BQFJ) have done great work in launching the QScience.com open-access online publishing platform. The platform represents a great opportunity to share peer-reviewed academic papers across the Internet through its various journals. Readers who are interested can read and download my paper in the Journal of Contemporary Islamic Studies at the following link :

Observations of the popularity and religious significance of blood-cupping (al-ḥijāma) as an Islamic medicine

I finally would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff at the Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS) and at BQFJ for publishing my paper, as well as others for all their kind help and support in reviewing earlier drafts.

Special thanks also go to Ahmed Hefny and in particular Captain Hamdy Abdullah Al-Sayed for being my source of inspiration and for the long conversations and debates we had together on the subject of hijama.

WHO SHOULD PERFORM HIJAMA? Part 2

This is a second viewpoint on the topic of Who should perform Hijama? which had a lot of varied comments from different parts of the world

WHO SHOULD PERFORM HIJAMA? Part 2
The following is an article from Muddassar Raja, (BSc, CHP) of Hijama Nation. The opinions discussed and expressed in the article are entirely the authors, and sharing the article on the blog does not necessarily mean we agree to everything being discussed therein in its entirely.

The Importance of Hijama:
Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "I did not pass by an angel from the angels on the night journey except that they all said to me: Upon you is cupping (hijama), O Muhammad." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3477)].

In the narration reported by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allaah be pleased with him) the angels said, "Oh Muhammad, order your Ummah (nation) with cupping (hijama)." [Saheeh Sunan Tirmidhee (3479)].
The “Night Journey” refers to Isra and Mi'raj, where Prophet Muhammad was given the gift of salah. According to the above hadith, the message to establish Hijama was emphasized, the same night. So knowing that the establishing practice of Hijama was ordered the same night as the order of Salah, should tell us the importance of Hijama Cupping Therapy.

The above ahadith also prove to us that we cannot take Hijama as only Prophet Muhammad’s (pbuh) sunnah, instead, it is an order from Allah (swt) to establish Hijama as a preferred treatment for humanity.
What can be cured by Hijama?
Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].
According to the above hadith, Hijama is the cure for every disease. As a Muslim we know it is Allah who cures us and Allah and his Messenger has recommended Hijama treatment to us, so we have to try it and leave the cure to Allah. If Allah wishes to cure you, He will, otherwise He wants to test you and reward you a bit more.
If Hijama treatment is the recommended treatment for humanity by Allah and His messenger, then what kind of treatments should it be able to treat? Through ahadith, research and our experience we have learnt that by administering Hijama, we can successfully treat medical, muscular, skeletal, metaphysical, psychological, spiritual and emotional issues.

According to Ibn al Qayyim, in his book, “The Medicine of Phrophet”, mentioned that the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) got his head cupped when he was afflicted with magic. So Hijama is the best treatment for metaphysical issues, such as Jin possession, Black magic and Evil eye.

Who should perform Hijama?
There are plenty of debates in the industry about who should perform Hijama. Right now, there are two main views in the market.
  1. Medical Doctors: Medical doctors feel that the only people who should be able to do Hijama treatment should be medical doctors or someone who has some kind of medical background. Even though modern medicine is very advance for doing testing, scans and surgeries, it is not equipped to deal with spiritual and metaphysical issues, that can cause a patient’s health and life to deteriorate.
  2. Imams and Mashaikh: Even though Imams and Mashaikh might be equipped to deal with spiritual and metaphysical issues, they might not have knowledge of physiology and anatomy. And they might not be aware of blood borne pathogens and cross contamination issues.
What is the solution?
So who should perform Hijama? We believe that the best person to perform Hijama is someone:
  1. Who has knowledge of  Physiology and Anatomy,
  2. Who is always conscious of hygiene, for the health and safety of his/her patient and him/herself.
  3. Who has at least the basic knowledge of metaphysical issues and knows how to deal with them with the help of Ruqiyah
  4. Who has some bodywork knowledge to deal with muscular problems
  5. Knowledge of some typology to figure out the root cause of the problem
Because of our belief that a Hijama Practitioner should have basic knowledge about all of the above, we have designed our Online Hijama Certification Course to cover introduction to all of the above points. And now we are partnering up with the experts in the above fields to bring the full courses in the market. So that we can help a Hijama Practitioner to have a Holistic approach.

We hope that all Allopathic and Holistic Health Practitioners can come together and provide tailor-made treatments for people who are seriously ill. We need to work together to put patients first and prioritize their safety and well-being. Our goal as Healthworkers should be to provide the highest standards of treatments and healthcare plans in collaboration with each other, inshallah!
