This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Imran Razeek - a male cupping therapist based in Colombo, Sri Lanka

- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is Imran Razeek, currently residing in Colombo, Sri Lanka. I am a lecturer in Chemistry, teaching Chemistry for London O/L & A/L Examinations. Myself & my wife got Hijama treatment from Dr. Noordeen Yousuf of Thailand on his visit to Sri Lanka. I was suffering with chronic migraine for 15 years & my wife was suffering from cervical spondylosis. Alhamdulilah with Allah's permission, we got instant relief & gradual cure after Hijamah.

Since then we wanted to learn & awaken this great sunnah among the laymen.My wife & I learned the art of Hijama from Dr. Noordeen. We got training under the doctor for nearly one month & handled more than 300 patients during the training period Alhamdullilah.

Since then we have been practicing this great missing therapy among our friends, relatives & family. But now I conduct free Hijama sessions at our local masjid once/twice a week for the general public. And my wife conducts sessions at home.


- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

Alhamdullilah I have seen great improvements in my patients specially with joint pains, lower back pain, body pains, headaches, sinusitis, Gastritis, Varicose veins, cervical spondylosis etc.

I also have handled patients with paralysis, Neuro fibro metosis, Skin rashes, Diabetes, Cholesterol, Trigger finger, Hypertension, poor vision, Infertility, wheezing, Addiction, Haemorrhoid, Speech difficulty, poor memory, Heel pain, Lymphoedema, Laryngitis, Elephantitis, Mental Disorder, Poisoning due to animal bites, carpal tunnel syndrome.



- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

Migraine, Joint pains, Back pain, sinusitis, Gastritis, Throat infection, Varicose veins, cervical spondylosis, Poisoning due to animal bites, carpal tunnel syndrome.

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy (which by getting rid of bad blood/ toxins in the body may help prevent conditions like high cholesterol/ heart disease / cancer in the long term)? And how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

As a general preventive therapy I recommend cupping to be done once a month/3 months on the sunnah days of 17th, 19th & 21st of the lunar month, as per the hadith: Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

Once a month on the 17th/19th/21st of the lunar month. My wife does it for me.

- As a non-Muslim country with a significant Muslim population, what is the overall prevalence of hijama therapy in Sri Lanka? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?

Most of the people are unaware about Hijama. It is not available in hospitals. But some Muslim doctors do practice in their clinics but its not very common.

Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located in Colombo?

At the moment I do not have a clinic, I conduct sessions at my residence & at our masjid in Colombo.

    It is a great ni'mah (blessing) of Allaah that one of our brothers of Sunnah, has been trained in this abandoned sunnah.

    what we know from our Prophet Sallaahu Alahiwasallam that Victory and salvation for our ummaah only will come by returning to the Sunnah of prophet Sallaahu Alaihiwasallam.

    CURE COMES FROM ALLAAH, AND HIJAMAH is the PROPHETIC SUNNAH.

    we know for Action to be accepted it has to be
    1) Sincere
    (HIJAMAH TREATMENT DONE TO SEEK THE PLEASURE OF Allaah)

    2) To follow the sunnah of the prophet
    (HIJAMH HAS TO BE DONE IN ACCORDANCE OF THE PROPHETIC TRADITION)

    Mashallah, the contribution of brother IMRAN RAZEEK is that , since he is brother of Sunnah, he is ready to correct and learn to do this sunnah with out SHIRK AND INNOVATION SUCH AS..

    1)PRACTICING ON SUNNAH DAY (17th, 19th & 21st of the lunar month)
    2)AVOIDING OF PROHABITED DAYS
    3)NO ANY RECITATION DURING CUPPING
    4)NO DEEP CUTS

    whatever I said, if it is truth it is from Allah, and if there are false it is from me and whispering sha'ytan.May Allah guide all of us to the straight path and show us the truth as truth and give the might to follow it, and show us the false as false and give the might to avoid it. Ameen.

  9. I am unaware of Hijama courses being held in India nor Tamil books on Hijama. There is a brother named Tanveer Ahmed who conducts Hijama sessions every quarterly in Hyderabad,India. You may post a comment in his guest-post OR you may contact him for more details

    I am also a patient who has experienced the wondrous effects of hijama by Allah almighty's permission.

    I am a patient who's been suffering from witchcraft for quite some time and just one session gave me quite a relief and peace to my mind and body.

    InshaAllah i hope to continue this treatment with brother imran raazee and raise awareness on these brilliant healing methods that allah gifted us with......

    I am a student, I came to know about this beautiful Sunnah of Rasool (saw) recently & i am looking forward to practice it through out my whole life. Insha Allah.

    Also i have some doubts regarding this Issue, It will be very useful if you can explain it. did Rasool (saw) prohibited doing cupping as a profession ?

    I came across theses Hadiths,

    1 - The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The earnings of a cupper are khabeeth (evil).”

    Narrated by Muslim (1568).

    2 – The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The worst of earnings are the wages of a prostitute, the price of a dog and the fee of a cupper.”

    Narrated by Muslim (1568).

    3 – It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade the earnings of a cupper.

    Narrated by Ahmad (7635), al-Nasaa’i (4673), Ibn Maajah (2165).

    Can you explain please ?

    The rulings regarding the fee of a cupper are that it is permitted to pay a fee, the fee is a halal and a good earning, and it is recommended as in any transaction that the fee or service charge be agreed upon before partaking in any services in order not to cause any dismay to the patient or the doctor. This is a ruling provided by to me via personal contact of Mufti Ibraheem Desi (Senior Lecturer at Darul Uloom Ta’leemuddin, Isipingo Beach and head of the Fatwa Department of the Jamiat ul Ulama (KZN, South Africa).

    In order to have correct understandings in Islamic rulings it is important to have a full understanding in the sciences of fique, hadith, arabic language and tafseer, as well as many other specialities and it can be misleading, confusing and sometimes even risky to extrapolate rulings or derive understanding from all hadith directly ourselves. This task requires someone who has an in depth understanding of such tasks and should be a reliable scholar with the qualified ability of deriving fatwa.

    "So ask the People of Knowledge if you do not know" Qur'an:21:7

    There are many people who give personal opinions regarding this issue however the scholars have given their rulings which supersede the opinions of the lay man as their opinions are based upon in depth knowledge and research on the topics and take into account all sources of evidence relating to a matter including apparently conflicting reports. One example of this is the hadith mentioned below.
    Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was treated with cupping, and he paid the cupper his fee.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/124; Muslim 1202).

  13. These narrations seem contradictory but Imam Nawawi said, "The scholars have differed over the earnings of the cupper. Most of them from the early and present generations are in the opinion that it is not forbidden… this is what is well known from the madhab of Ahmed…" [Shahr Saheeh Muslim 10/233].
    Sheikh Bin Baz in the explanation of Buloogh al-Maram tape no. 18 said, "In the hadeeth of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) is a proof to show that it is allowed to do cupping and take a wage for it even if the earning of the cupper is considered degraded, there is no problem if he is given a wage…it is not considered forbidden and this is why the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) gave the one who cupped him his wage. Ibn 'Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said, "if it was forbidden then he wouldn't have paid him… it is better for the cupper not to take anything or he should seek a profession other than cupping."

    Sheikh ibn 'Uthaimeen rahimahullaah said that the word khabeeth has different meanings, it could mean forbidden as in the Verse:

    { ويحل لهم الطيبات ويحرم عليهم الخبائث }

    [soorah 'Araaf:157]

    It could refer to something disliked as in the statement of the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) regarding onions: "It is from a disliked tree," or it could refer to something degraded as in the Verse:

    {ولا تيمموا الخبيث منه }

    Soorah al-Baqarah: 267]]

    The fact that the word Khabeeth could have these different meanings then we cannot say that it is forbidden since the Shariah principle says whenever there is more than one meaning then it cannot be used as proof to say that it is forbidden and this is
    why the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) paid the cupper.

    Sheikh Saalih ibn Fawzan was asked regarding the wage of the cupper. He replied that it is allowed but disliked and that it is better for the Muslim to choose a profession to live by which is better that cupping and if he takes a wage then that is allowed since the the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) himself paid the cupper after being cupped. If it was forbidden, he wouldn't have given him. [fatwa no. 13886].

    A questioner asker sheikh Zaid al-Madkhali on the earnings of the cupper and he replied: The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) performed cupping and in return gave the cupper his wage for it but at the same time the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) also said the earning of the cupper is degraded so this means that it is forbidden for him to eat, drink and clothe himself from it but rather he uses it for example in paying rent for his dwelling.
