Review Paper: Methods of Wet Cupping Therapy (Al-Hijamah): In Light of Modern Medicine and Prophetic Medicine

"Methods of Wet Cupping Therapy (Al-Hijamah): In Light of Modern Medicine and Prophetic Medicine" - by SM El Sayed, HS Mahmoud and MMH Nabo

The following is a blog-post in the form of a written interview with Dr Salah M El Sayed, one of the joint authors of a review paper on Wet Cupping, the download link for which is given below.

Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up getting involved with studying / researching hijama?
I'm Dr Salah Mohamed El Sayed, Bachelor degree of Medicine, Master degree in Medical Biochemistry, Diploma degree in Pediatrics (Ain Shams university, Egypt) Ph.D degree in Pediatrics (Tokushima Uinversity, Japan 2012). I'm assistant lecturer in Medical Biochemistry, Sohag University, Egypt.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions have you researched with regards to treatment with hijama/ wet-cupping?
Till now, I write review articles not experimental or clinical work. Now, I live for few months in Al-madinah, Saudi Arabia. I do not have a job in Saudi Arabia to help me in research.
I just read, analyze and write reviews and medical hypotheses on remedies of prophetic medicine particularly Al-hijamah. I studied Al-hijamah regarding its medical bases and its review article is already accepted and I will send it to you as soon as I get the PDF from the journal (UPDATE: Link to second paper now added below . I explain in medical basis roles of Al-hijamah in treating many diseases differing in etiology and pathogeneses e.g. hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus, headache, fibromyalgia and others

- Please explain briefly how your study carried out? If applicable, how many patients took part and how long did it take?
My study was a review as I mentioned.

Patients will benefit for sure from Al-hijamah as their blood and interstitial fluids will be cleared at least partially from causative pathological substances e.g. blood of headache patient will be cleared from substance P, neuropeptide Y, pain mediators, prostglandins and others which will correct the cause of headache.
Hypertensive patients benefit from Al-hijamah by excreting a portion of intravascular fluids which may contain vasoconstrictor substances e.g. angiotensin, aldosterone or vasoconstrictor hormones e.g. cortisol in endocrine causes of hypertension

- What was the outcome/conclusion of the study?

On pressure-dependent basis and size-dependent filtration basis, Al-hijamah is the only powerful therapeutic procedure that clears blood and interstitial fluids from causative pathological substances that differ from disease to disease. This helps regaining homeostasis.

- Are you planning any other hijama-related studies in the near future?

Inshaa Allah for sure. I need facilities, laboratory, patients, funding and your doaaa. I intend to use Al-hijamah in treating many incurable diseases.

- If you have hijama done yourself, how often do you get it done, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

I learn the technique of Al-hijamah this year. I did it independently for 5 patients. Most complaints are musculoskeletal pain, disc prolapse, hypertension and headache.
I myself underwent Al-hijamah for hypertension. It was 140/90 mm Hg but was 120/80 immediately after the sitting.
I can not do Al-hijamah for myself as I cannot reach the anatomical sites and it is not easy to scarify your skin as you will not be accurate to operate on your back

My teacher, Hany Salah (student of Sheikh Ahmed Hefny) taught me Al-hijamah and did it for me once.

 - Is there anything else you would like to add?

Al-hijamah can treat any disease in which there is excess intravascular fluid or soluble excessive substance in blood. In other words, any disease which may benefit from clearing blood and interstitial spaces from causative pathological substances will improve with Al-hijamah therapy

- Finally where can readers obtain or purchase your above research paper from?
