The following is a guest blog-post in the form of a written interview with Hasnain Zafar Baloch, a male cupping therapist from Malaysia.
- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?
I am a Senior Instructional Designer (E-learning) at International Medical University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. I did my Master of Science (Computer Science) from University of Science Malaysia. Since childhood being living in Saudi Arabia I have heard about Hijama but never tried it. When I was working at King AbdulAziz University Jeddah as lecturer one of my Colleagues from America told me that he was reading about Hijama and asked me about it. I just explained about Hijama what I knew at that time.
After few weeks one of my friends told us that he had Hijama session performed by Br. Abu Abdul Wali. He started explaining about the benefits and the knowledge that MashAllah Br. Abu Abdul Wali has. I started getting interested in Hijama. I told my American friend that I am also interested in getting Hijama session. When I had my first Hijama I had just came back from Al-Medina Al-Munawara to Jeddah. It was almost 12 midnight when I had my first hijama finished. This was after all the day travelling and lack of sleep for a few nights.
The next morning at Fajjar prayer I woke up without any alarm and I was feeling fresh, light and strong. AlhumdullillAllah. So I started telling my friends and soon after few months I had my second session and Br. Abu Abdul Wali explained and advised us all that every Muslim house should have one Hijama therapist. When one of my (non-Muslim) friend, yoga instructor from Malaysia, came to know about Hijama, he started asking me that he is also interested to do it and learn. I feel bit ashamed how come a non-Muslim have strong faith on what our Prophet Muhammad (saw) gave to us and decided that I being a Muslim should learn first. So I decided and contacted brother Br. Abu Abdul Wali. AlhumdullilAllah the way he taught us makes me feel like I should practice it. After his course finished I started practicing at Jeddah. Soon I shifted to Malaysia since then I am practicing Hijama. AlhumdullilAllah
- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?
Mostly laziness (lethargy), lower back pain, joint pain, Urinary Track Infection, Diabetes etc.
- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?
AhumdullilAllah most of the time whatever illnesses reported after one or two Hijama session reduced to more than 90%.
- Do you have any interesting case-studies that you can briefly share with us from your hijama treatments?
One of best results that I had, I am sharing as a feedback given after the performing the hijama.
“I want to share my experiences through this email to give others the benefits of doing Hijamah
Actually before 3-4 years I used to use computer for a long time which affected negatively my right hand. Coincidentally, I was complaining to Br. Hasnain Baloch about that, and he advised to do Hijamah under his guarantee. Fortunately I did it, and that was the FIRST time in my life. After doing Hijamah I felt that the pain is decreased and I also felt light myself . Tow days later the pain decreased to 85% and this because of the mercy of Allah (Almighty) after that because of the advice that Brother Hasnain had given me. JazakAllah Khair. I did Hijamah once more after that in the same place in the back and also on my hand, Alhamdollilah no more pain from that time.
Actually, I didn't stop doing Hijamah but also I ask Br.Hasnain to do it for me from time to time, I am also recommending it to all my friends and my family.
Finally, I really want to thank Br. Hasnain for his advice to do Hijamah and I also really appreciate it. May Allah bless you and all the Muslims around the world. and May Allah Help you to spread the spirit of practicing Tibb-e-Nabawi.’’

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)
Hijamah is the one of the best Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Mohammad (SAW) so we should have strong belief and use it as preventative therapy.
Twice a year is the best option. To further explain I would like to qoute from Tibb-e-Nabawi web site.
“Following are the true principals of SHIFA / Healing which cure both the heart (soul) & body :
1. Healing by Belief (Yaqeen) that Allah Has Sent the disease & Allah is the HEALER, & if the healing is delayed, it is by Allah’s Wisdom & Hikmah
2. Healing by Aa’maal-e-Saalehaat, Salaat, Sadaqah, Fast, Quran, Zikr, Duaas & Ruqya, Husn-e-Khulq, abstaining from sins, Istighfaar, etc.
3. Healing by the foods of Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam
4. Healing by the herbs of Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam
5. Healing by HIJAMAH; which is Sunnah & the best kind of treatment in this world
When all of the above tools are combined together, it is very difficult for any sickness / ailment to withstand the crushing power of Tibb-e-Nabawi.’’
- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?
Twice a year and whenever there is need.
- What is the overall prevalance of hijama therapy in Malaysia? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?
We do have few well maintain clinics where they have hijama therapy, Although Malaysian Muslims are practicing it as a valid therapy. In Malay dominant community you will find Hijama Therapists. The cultural influence is more on these practices.
Jazak Allah,
