Hijamah for the treatment of Sciatica

Hijamah for the treatment of Sciatica - by Abu Abdul Wali

This is a guest-post by Abu Abdul Wali - a male cupping therapist based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Sciatica is a disease caused by general compression or irritation of spinal nerve roots, doctors say that the nerves are compressed (usually) when the patient lifts heavy weight, but the actual reason is the accumulation of dry & thick septic substances that compress the nerves. You may not feel it, but the septic substance is exerting a pressure on your nerves & when it remains for years, nerves are compressed daily, very slowly by 1/ 100 fraction of a millimeter & all of a sudden, lifting heavy weights or other injury results in the existence of Sciatica. Constipation is another reason for the build-up of toxins in lower back.

Ibn Al Qayyam mentioned that extracting out the septic substance requires a medicine that can bring the problem to its maturity & then expels it out through stools, & he explained that for people of Hijaaz, fat from a fat-tailed sheep is the best (laxative) medicine. Herbs from Tibb-e-Nabwi like Mugwort (Sheeh), Frankincense, Sana Makki, Habb al Rashad, Aloe Vera, Ginger, black seed, etc. all will help to cure Sciatica Insha'Allah. Hijamah + Tibb-e-Nabwi herbs can surely save a Sciatica patient from spinal surgery.

Sciatica is called Iriq-al-Nasa, wrongly pronounced as Arq-un-Nisaa in Urdu.

Sciatica patients are cupped at 10 ~ 11 points all together, covering the upper back, middle back, Lumbar section from where the Sciatic nerve comes out & at the backside of leg, and downwards where the nerve travels till the foot. Such a Hijamah brings an immediate relief, but it should be coupled with Tibb-e-Nabawi foods, herbs such as Habb-al-Rashad (Cress), massaging with infused olive oil of Qust-al-Bahri & Rashaad, & applying a Cataplasm (Zammad ~ poultice) made with ground cress seeds+Barley's Saweeq+vinegar, it is the formulation of Sahib-al-Qanoon (Ibn-e-Seena). Ground Habb al Rashad seeds (2 parts) are mixed with one part of barley's Saweeq (Sattu) & made like a bread dough in pure vinegar (you can also add some olive oil), the blessed mixture is applied as a cataplasm (poultice) wherever the patient feels pain, Ibn e Seena said that this Zamaad is best for Sciatica pains (Iriq al Nasa عرق النسا).
He wrote : ينفع من عرق النسا شربا وضمادا بالخل وسويق الشعير & similar words were repeated by Ibn Al Qayyam when he wrote about Habb al Rashad وإذا خلط بسويق الشعير والخل، وتضمد به، نفع من عرق النسا، وحلل الأورام الحارة في آخرها‏.‏ When Cress is mixed with barley Saweeq (Flour) and vinegar and used as a bandage, it helps the patients of Sciatica and decomposes hot tumors.

When your Zamaad is ready, apply it on your painful limb, put a small piece of polyethylene shopper bag over it & tie with a cloth like bandage, it should be done after Isha, as you have to keep the Zamaad for 3-4 hours, it is better to apply before sleep & open it in the morning at Fajar. Ibn e Seena also wrote that Zamaad of Qust al Bahri (with olive oil) also provides relief from Iriq al Nasa & Allah is The HEALER. It is advisable that the patient avoids exertion, especially lifting weights.

  2. Unani system of medicine also known as traditional Islamic medicine is 51/2 years full time medical course offered by many universities in India. The degree is Bachelor of Unani medicine & Surgery and post graduation in different specialisation leading to Doctorate in Medicine (MD).

Dry Cupping is done by qualified Chinese medicine practitioners & Wet cupping (Hijama) is done by qualified Unani Medicine practitioners.

It is very important to get the treatment done by qualified professionals only. Most of the Health ministries around the world are creating awareness about the right qualifications to get hijama done. Even middle eastern countries including saudi arabia have banned the hijama procedure being done by unqualified people since Feb 2011.

  3. slam nice read about the cure of sciatica by hijamah /cupping therapy , only a bit surprized to see that 11 cups at one go for this problem is too much , in our experience we only use one or max 2 cups at first session and this brings the patient out of misery alhumdolilah , then after some time one more session with just one or two wet cups , is it wise to puncture a person all around if a little can do it all .
AND SOME TIME WE JUST DO FASD OR VEIN SECTION TO REMOVE BAD BLOOD OUT OF THAT VEIN ONLY , AND NO CUPPING .
    thank you very much .

  4. Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam asked for Hijamah on the head for headache, similarly, he took Hijamah on the foot for pain in that area, so we apply cups (at the painful areas) based on the guidance of our beloved Prophet, because Sciatic pain moves in the back, hip, thigh, calf, foot, etc. we apply Hijamah on the entire track of Sciatic nerve.
For patients with Sciatica, it is our experience that doing Hijamah partially never brings perfect results as compared to a comprehensive Hijamah starting from KAHIL till the calf or FOOT.
If you read the book written by Dr. Tamer Sha'baan, he also mentioned 10 cups for Sciatica & even for IBS problems, so number of cups is not a priority, the most important is the maximum quantity of blood that should be drained in a single session. For Blood donation, doctors take out a pint (473 ml) & they say that a healthy person can safely donate 6 times per year, & for Hijamah, our limit is 400 ml per session & we recommend 2 ~ 3 sessions per year only.
From head to toe, the residing area of Hijamah blood is the sub-cutaneous tissue, & we never know which part has the most of septic blood's accumulation, some cups drain more & others release lesser blood, but we stop the suction when 400 ml of blood is drained out in TOTAL.
Masha'Allah that based on our observation, most Mahjooms release the blood within the range of 300 ~ 400 ml (women have a lesser quantity as we feel that some detoxification is done by the menstruation). But there are exceptional cases where some people have a higher Blood oxidation rate, those are (1) Who take food from restaurants (2) Who stay away from their wives & their semen is spoiled (3) Who frequently take High Cholesterol seafood (4) Who have taken medicines for years (5) Those under the evil spell of JINN, Sehr (Magic), & Evil Eye (6) Those who are lovers of Dish Antenna / Music & do not protect their eyes & ears, those who watch the Non-Mahram (7) Those who neglect Salaat & praying in the Masjid, those who neglect Zikr, Tilawat & repenting to Allah.
We have no experience on FASD (puncturing the veins) and if Usman Baloch has treated Sciatica with Fasd, he should explain it more, (Sciatica is related to nerve & not the vein), and we bring for you the words written by Ibn Al Qayyam "The benefits of cupping include cleansing the exterior parts of the body more than puncturing the veins, or puncturing the veins, is better when used to extract blood from the internal parts of the body. Cupping entails removing blood from the various parts of the skin. Using either Hijamah (cupping) or Fasd (puncturing the veins) depends on the time of year, the area, the age and state of the ailing person. For instance, cupping is more beneficial than puncturing the veins in warm areas, warm weather and hot tempered people, whose blood is near to maturity (concerning the septic substances in the blood). In this case, the septic, maturing blood will collect near the skin. Cupping extracts the septic blood more efficiently than puncturing the veins. This is why using cupping for children and those who cannot bear puncturing the veins is better and more useful.

  5. Masha'Allah that you have under-classed all Hijamah therapists who do not have a Chinese Medicine Degree OR a BUMS Degree, it means that all those who have certificates from ICS, BCS or NHNF are also invalid for Hijamah.

For your information, it was 2007 & not 2011 when Hijamah was banned in Saudi Arabia, & it was banned even from the hospitals. There are very few Hijamah clicnics running in Makkah / Madinah who have old licenses.

It is good to have Hijamah with all precautions, safety measures & Hygiene, but we have no words to explain to you that in the times of Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam, Hijamah was performed by the SLAVES who were not the medical doctors.

  6. Part 2 on the comment by Usman Baloch:

Shuaib Sahib, Assalam O Alaikum, and we discuss more on the treatment of Sciatica.

As we know that Hijamah was popular & well adopted during the times of Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihie Wasallam, what is the reason that our beloved Prophet advised to treat Sciatica with the fat of fat-tailed sheep (a laxative suitable for people in Hijaaz) ? He said "Curing sciatica is accomplished by melting the fat from the tail of a nomad's ewe, then the fat is divided into three parts and one part per day is drunk on an empty stomach".

From here, we understand that cleaning the stomach of a Sciatic patient definitely brings relief. But for us who take a complex diet, Ibn Al Qayyam also wrote that “If the diet is simple, simple medications are suitable for the simple ailments. The compound ailments, on the other hand, usually occur due to a complex diet and this is why compound medicines are suitable in those cases”. So what we posted at your website was the combination of laxatives like Senna, Mugwort, Ginger, Habb-al-Rashaad, Aloe Vera Extract, etc. that can bring the septic substances to maturity & then expel them out vide stools.

Habb-al-Rashad is the other beauty for curing Sciatica, applying its poultice blended in Barley’s Saweeq & vinegar is the other solution for Sciatica. So we can’t cure Sciatica with either Hijamah or FASD alone, that is why we emphasize for seeking Shifa from Tibb-e-Nabawi as a whole.

You may read further the words of Ibn Al Qayyam when he explained Hijamah & FASD, just see what he wrote for Hijamah on the foot, it substitutes for (FASD) puncturing the Saphena.

It was reported that the Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said:

    "خَيْرُ ما تداويتم به الحِجَامَة والفَصْدُ

"Cupping and puncturing the veins are your best remedies".

This Hadith is directed at the people of Hijaaz and warm areas in general, for their blood is delicate and circulates closer to the surface of the skin, while the pores on their skin are wide and their strength is weakened (i.e., during summer). Puncturing the veins is harmful for them. Puncturing of each of the veins usually has a special benefit. For instance, puncturing of the basilica vein (the large vein running on the inner side of the upper arm) is useful against the heat of the liver and spleen and various blood-related tumors in these two organs. It is in addition useful for tumors of the lungs (emphysema), arterial pulsation, pleurisy and all blood-related diseases of veins in the lower part of the knee to the hip. Furthermore, puncturing of the median vein helps against the various swellings that appear throughout the entire body, especially when the swelling is blood-related, and contains spoiled blood in general. In addition, puncturing of the arm’s vein helps against the ailments in the head and neck that result from excessive amounts of blood or from septic blood. Puncturing of the jugular vein helps against the ailments of the spleen, asthma, thoracic cavity and forehead pain.

Cupping the upper section of the back helps against the aches of the shoulder and the throat. Further, cupping the two posterior jugular veins helps against the ailments of the head, face, teeth, ears, eyes, nose and throat, if these ailments were caused by excessive presence of blood, soiled blood or both.

Hijamah under the chin helps against toothache, face ailments and throat infections when used at the proper time; it cleanses and purifies the head and the jaws. Further, cupping on top of the foot substitutes for the puncturing of the Saphena, which is a vein on the heel. This kind of cupping helps against the ulcers that occur on the thighs and legs, the interruption of monthly periods and skin irritation on the testicles.

Cupping on the lower part of the chest helps against spots, sores and mange on the thigh. It also helps against gout, hemorrhoids, elephantiasis and itchiness on the back.
