Hijama Seminar in Mombasa, Kenya

The following is an announcement from Hijama Centres UK

UK Hijama Specialist Dr Rizwhan Suleman is visiting Kenya this summer to provide a hijama awareness seminar at Mombassa’s Medical Professionals Evening.

The visit will be an attempt to help revive the Sunnah in east Africa and to enlighten a small group of health professionals on the practice.

What is hijama:

Hijama is an ancient medical treatment used and recommended by the prophet (saw). It is practiced by forming suctions on the surface of the skin over very small cuts or pin pricks allowing the removal of inflamed, harmful, toxic or stagnant blood.

What are the benefits:

The benefits of hijama have been recognised & utilised by prominent scholars & physicians throughout history. The Prophet (saw) himself used it to relieve migraine, treat hip pain & promote general health. Hijama encourages blood circulation & heightens immune function. It helps restore balance in the body allowing it to function at the optimal level. Hijama is effective in aiding the treatment of a wide number of ailments & can be used as a preventative medicine to service the body & maintain good health.

Is it Safe?

When practiced in a clean & hygienic environment under the guidance of a qualified Doctor or Health Professional, hijama is very safe & relatively risk free. A full health assessment must be carried out before having any treatment. This includes a detailed case history & physical exam. Heart rate, temperature, blood pressure & medications should always be checked. Further tests should be carried out if needed before treatment.

Why might Kenya Need Hijama?

Kenya like many African countries is a land with great natural resources and wealth, ironically however Kenya faces huge amounts of poverty and debt leaving many people unable to afford medical care. On many occasions people will avoid seeing a doctor for pains and problems due to the fear of cost implications. Long term medication and pain killers are just too expensive for most people to afford. Hijama is a cost effective and efficient solution to help people in such cases. By reviving the practice of hijama and educating people with the benefits of it people can manage many illnesses and conditions with the aid of qualified doctors and practitioners.

What is the Aim of the visit?

The aim of the visit is to help educate health professionals, doctors and eventually the general population about the huge benefits that hijama can bring to the health care system when integrated appropriately into general practice. It is designed to encourage Kenyan Medics to look at hijama in a revived and modern scientific light rather than an out dated traditional practice. The hope is to revive this sunna and allow it to be widely available in clean, safe and clinical environments, and to encourage its inclusion into the list of treatment options available to patients suffering with everyday ailments.

Hijama has taken a new turn in the west as Muslims realize that it is something that can be used alongside modern medical science and understanding as well as for religious and spiritual practice. This visit will provide an opportunity for this turn to stretch across the world to east Africa and inshallah

Health Means Wealth

The Sunnah days for wet cupping (hijama) in this month of Shaban are as follows:

Tuesday 17th Shaban 1432 - 19th July 2011

Thursday 19th Shaban 1432 - 21st July 2011

Please kindly note that these dates are based on the new, lunar month according to the sighting of the new moon by the naked eye, as cupping (hijama) is a form of worship. These dates may sometimes vary from the calculated, lunar dates.

AlhamdIlah the Sunnah Days are also posted on our website every month:

Cupping (Hijama) In Its Time Is A Cure For Every Disease

Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

The Best Days For Cupping (Hijama)

Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach* is best. It increases the intellect and improves the memory. It improves the memory of the one memorising. So whoever is going to be cupped then on a Thursday in the name of Allaah. Keep away from being cupped on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be cupped on a Monday or Tuesday. Do not be cupped on a Wednesday because it is the day that Ayoub was befallen with the trial. You will not find leprosy except (by being cupped) on Wednesday or Wednesday night." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3488)].

* 'alaa ar-reeq in arabic means to fast until after being treated with cupping. Once the treatment of cupping has been completed, one may eat and drink.

As for the Islamic day and night, the night enters before the day. So at sunset on Tuesday, Wednesday night comes in. Cupping (hijama) is best performed during the daytime between the athaan of fajr and the athaan of maghrib because yawm in arabic means daytime.

The Sunnah days for cupping (hijama) every month are when the 17th or 19th or 21st of the lunar month coincide with a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. These are the best and most beneficial days for cupping (hijama). If one is not able to be cupped on 17th, 19th or 21st (coinciding with Monday, Tuesday or Thursday) then any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday of the month.

Cupping (Hijama) For Women

Jaabir ibn Abdullah y reported Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) asked permission from the Messenger r to be treated with cupping (hijama). So the Messenger r ordered Abu Teeba t to cup her. Jaabir ibn Abdullah y said, " I think he r said that Abu Teeba t is her brother through breastfeeding or a young boy who didn't reach puberty". [Saheeh Muslim (5708), abu Dawud (4102), Saheeh ibn Maajah (3480)].

Dry and massage cupping may be performed at any time.

We pray you find this information helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries, comments or feedback.
JazakAllah khair for your support.

The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever revives a Sunnah from my Sunnah and the people practise it, will have the same reward of those who practise it without their reward diminishing…"
[Sunan ibn Maajah (209)].
