Hijama is like an oil-change for the Human Body

"Hijama is like an oil-change for the Human Body" - by Dr. Munir Ravalia from Zakariya Health Studios

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Dr. Munir Ravalia - a male cupping therapist & dental practitioner based in South London, England.

- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

I am Dr. Munir Ravalia from Zakariya Health Studios. I have been doing hijama for over 4 years and learnt the science in Egypt. Having had hijama done on myself I realised the great benefits. I also have set up the International Cupping Therapy Society with Dr. Tamer from Egypt to bring all practitioners of all faiths together. We need to have the conventional medical work take hijama seriously and this can only come about through proper randomised controlled studies. Please all assist us and work with us. The membership is free so please join us.

I have great admiration for and give sincere thanks to sister Anisa from Natural Health Natures Finest, and I call on all in the field to assist her as she has really done great work for all those involved in terms of having the first registered course, insurance for practitioners and having hijama (wet cupping) recognised in UK.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

Obviously many people come for Sunnah treatment who are medically fit and well, but I have treated many cases of people who have lost faith in conventional medicine and their general medical practitioners and alhamdulillah Hijama has been a gift from God for them.

Having worked in head and neck trauma, I have treated many people suffering from conditions related to this anatomical part of the body and currently work closely with brother Walid Zam Zam who specialises in herbal medicine and ruqiya treatment. So we combine our efforts and treat the patients as many conditions have a multifactorial aetiological cause and as such require such management. Many patients suffering from stress and those of a nervous disposition find great help with hijama therapy.

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

As I have mentioned most conditions I find to be treated completely and holistically require hijama/lifestyle changes of the patient/ herbal medication from the sunnah eg honey/blackseed and (psychological/jinn related conditions) require ruqiya.

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy (which by getting rid of bad blood/ toxins in the body may help prevent conditions like high cholesterol/ heart disease / cancer in the long term)? And how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

The way I describe cupping is like a car needing an MOT every year. The body needs the same: drain the old oil (blood) and refresh/detox the body. For those medically healthy once a year before the summer seasons should suffice, as according to prophetic traditions, but more than this causes no harm.
