Hijamah in Pakistan

The following is a guest blog-post by Dr Sajid Ayub, a male Hijama Practitioner in Pakistan

Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

All thanks to Allah who enabled me to learn Hijamah and granted me the opportunity to practice it as well and peace and blessings upon the Prophet(p.b.u.h) who was sent as a mercy for the worlds and brought physical and spiritual healing for mankind.

I am grateful to Dr. Hashim (American Board certified gastroenteritis) from whom I learned Hijamah. Dr. Hashim is a skilled practitioner who has learned both Hijamah and acupuncture in China.
Likewise, I benefited from Dr. Amjad Ahsan Ali, MBBS.(PAK), MRCP, (UK). He practices Hijamah in Madrasah Ibn' Abbas, (Karachi), and is an expert in this field.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?
- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

Any treatment may cure some people completely, some partially, some temporarily and some don't benefit. Shifa is from Allah. Following is a list of diseases which Hijamah has proved effective in curing in most cases.
1.Headaches    2.Tension headaches     3.Depression    4.Migraine    5.Shoulder aches    6.Kidney pain    7.Blood pressure    8.Dizziness    9.Tinnitus    10.Backache
11Varicose veins    12.Pain in the heel    13.Legs pains    14.Psychiatric illnesses
15.Black Magic    16.Leucoderma    17.Knee pains    18.Allergies

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

If the patient is not cured by one Hijamah then Hijamah may be repeated from three to seven times with a gap of at least two weeks to one month between consecutive cupping. This should be decided according to the doctor's advice

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

As a Hijamah therapist I himself Hijamah differexnt times and I done every on 17th of the lunar month. My wife,Father, and Brothers do the Hijama treatment for me.

- What is the status and overall prevalance of hijama therapy in your city and  country ? Is it
Hijamah is an ancient and most beneficial mode of treatment. But our country hospitals and clinics are not practices Hijamah.

- Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located and what services do you offer?

Our Clinics are in Pakistan differents cities like Our main office is in Karachi, our Branches in Raiwind Near about Tablighi markaz, Rawalpindi , Peshawar and Abbotabad.

- Is there anything else you would like to add?

Hijamah is the Sunnah of the Prophet(p.b.u.h) and most effective treatment. The Prophet(p.b.u.h) himself was treated with Hijamah and encouraged others to do so.

Hijama for I.V.F. Treatment and Severe Depression

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with a female patient about her experience of hijama therapy in Qatar for the treatment of depression and infertility.

The following note is from the therapist who treated this female patient:

Originally this lady came to me with the intention of getting help in Increasing her egg count as no medicines and treatments were working on her to increase the egg count. And she couldn't register herself for IVF treatment

Now she is successful in registering for the I.V.F treatment with increased egg count, but hopes and wishes before her appointments for I.V.F that she conceives with the help of hijama insha Allah.

- What condition did you suffer from (if any)?

By the grace of Allah I  am now living a healthy life. 20 years ago I got married, as soon as I began my married life.I started to face different diseases. The first incident that I faced was a miscarriage. This made my life miserable. I became a patient of severe depression. After a few years I conceived again, but again had a miscarriage. Likewise I had 3 more miscarriages. But my sorrow due to the miscarriages converted into  severe stress and depression. I lost interest in life. From one place to another place my husband moved to get my treatment. Due to stress I lost my energy of muscles of shoulders, .my legs muscles also became weak and while talking I would stammer..I lost my confidence. My left side of the body was badly damaged with severe numbness and pain. I just wanted to end my life. I was really fed up with my health problems and all the time I was going through headaches and huffiness, being issueless I considered myself useless.

Being an artist by profession I couldnt do anything to bring my creativity out, empty feelings made me self pity. Infertility was damaging my whole body and soul. Before my marriage my friends used to call me bubbly but after marriage my infertility made me isolated, anti-social. Life seemed a daily burden to me.

- What other treatment did you try before trying hijama therapy?

I used to take different treatments. I didn't leave any of treatment, whether it was homeopathy, allopathic, herbal, spiritual...all kinds of treatment I been through, massages for pain. Home remedies etc.  I even went for IVF treatment but my blood tests and ultrasound reports revealed that the egg quality was bad and only 4-5 eggs are formed.  I received rejection of treatment from there.

- Where do you live and where did you go for the hijama therapy?

One day my sister called me and told me about the treatment of hijama...then I started to search on net to gain its knowledge...when I read about it I then decided to take this treatment...at last through the internet I got a number of hijama center for appointment .As I was living in Pakistan and was going to move to Qatar I browsed the Hijama Directory and found a female therapist in Qatar.

- What did the treatment involve?
I havetaken 6 sessions with my therapist in Qatar.  She had a detailed study of my reports checked every pain site even went into details of my diet and lifestyle. It became clear to me I was in safe and comfortable hands.
First few sessions involved cupping at many places 5-6 each time . Then I even took an  aroma massage cupping session, for my almost dead left side of body.

- What was the result?

As soon as I had my 1st session..life changed miraculously. That night I slept peacefully after a long time. I.felt peace of mind. After the 2nd session, my shoulder pain and headache was reduced. The 3rd session removed my leg pain. Until now I have taken almost 6 sessions and now I am back to my normal life. My behavior has become soft again, I have a tension and stress free mind and positivity toward life. All pains have vanished.
I sleep like a baby. And now my egg quality has improved greatly and the number of eggs formed is 11-12. And the doctor has registered my name for IVF treatment as well.

- What was your overall impression of the therapist and her practice?

I always kept on saying "please remove all bad blood out of my body ", and she used to smile, I used to go in with  throbbing pain conditions and return like a normal person with full-on energy.
May allah bless her for her kindness . At times I used to be amazed how she handled her apparatus so neatly and remembering the aromatherapy and massage cupping session still makes feel fresh. She is a very skilled lady and has lot of concern for her patients.
I just love her way of treatment. Ma sha allah.

- How did the therapist get to learn hijama therapy (was it a course he attended or was it something handed down from generation to generation in their family)?

Yes I asked my therapist she had studied hijama from U.K. She had practical traning from Qatar and India.
As well she has worked under supervision of few people.
She also had training in emergency medical first aid from the local Hamad hospital recognised by the Supreme council of Health in Doha , Qatar.

Hijama at Detox Therapy in Manchester, England

The following is a guest blog-post by Juvaria Khalid, a female Hijama Practitioner in Manchester, England

- Please give us a short introduction about yourself,
and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is Mrs.Juvaria Khalid and I am the founder and a therapist at Detox Therapy, Manchester. I was brought up and educated in Dubai. I have a background of Physiotherapy from Gulf Medical College, Ajman. It wasn't really a surprise or difficult for me to learn Hijama as I have always been a student of Science.

Alhamdulillah, I got married in 2007 and moved to the UK.

Quite interesting is the story of how I got into hijama.

I had gone to Hajj in 2008 with my inlaws, and that's the very first time I heard about Hijama. My father in law, mother in law and sister in law had it done in Madina.

I was quite scared at the sight of the marks. But, its actually when i saw the benefits that my interest grew.

My mother in law could not do sujood(in prayer) for a whole year. My father in law insisted on her getting cupped as he could feel a difference within himself when he had it done.

Alhamdulillah, by the Grace of Allah, my mother in law did her sujood in Masjid Annabawi after a whole year and on that very same day that she had hijama done. Also, her High Blood Pressure tablets decreased to just one tablet a day instead of 3.

Witnessing these  benefits, I searched for courses in UK and found NHNF, from where i did my Hijama course Alhamdulillah, with a very well respected and experienced teacher and practitioner : Sister Anisa Kisson.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

I've been doing it for 4 years, so I have experienced quite a few illnesses...

Common ones would be: Eczema, Arthritis, IBS, Acne, Migraines, Hyper Tension, Diabetes, Infertility, PCOS

Alhamdulillah, I've had positive feedback from all...

May Allah give shifa to all... Ameen

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

Yes, Alhamdulillah, they all have responded very well to cupping..

Mostly Arthritis, IBS, eczema , hyper tension, Migraines are a few conditions in which instant results can be seen, whereas, the others do require a few sessions depending on the how chronic the illnesses are.

- Do you have any interesting case-studies that you can briefly share with us from your hijama treatments?

I do tell a lot of my clients about this 17 year old, college going girl , whose mother had been to every doctor, therapist, practitioner and tried all remedies you can think of, but, nothing seemed to cure her daughter's eczema which was spread all over her body since birth. It had started effecting her internally as well , due to which she had very low immunity. She would go a week to college and be off for the  next as her body could not cope.

Alhamdulillah, after 9 months of regular monthly hijama, not only did her eczema clear away but her immunity level had improved and she was regular at college and more energetic and lively... Her skin was clean and clear, hair quality improved and grown... It was good to see her happy with the results and to see the smile on her mother's face...

Another case that I would like to share, specially with my sisters who are going through this...
In 2011, a depressed and desperate sister came to me for help with her infertility... Its very sad to see couples go through it. May Allah bless all with healthy and pious offspring... Ameen...

Alhamdulillah, Subhan Allah, ONLY after the first month of hijama, this sister conceived the very next month.

The story doesnt end here... After 2 years, in 2013, the very same sister was back for another Hijama session as she believed and had faith in Hijama. Once again, Alhamdulillah, Allah The Almighty blessed her and she is expecting again...

Hijama has a lot to do with the belief of people I say.

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

Cupping, is the preventative in this modern day and age. Personally, all medicines treat one disease but bring many others aka side effects...

Our Prophet was commanded by the angels about Hijama.  I strongly believe, a Sunnah of our Prophet can  never cause us any harm..

For a healthy person who would want to get it done for general well-being, it is recommended to have hijama done every 3 months or so..

For a person with illnesses, it is recommended once or twice a month, depending on the age, and how chronic the illness is.

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

Alhamdulillah I get cupping done every 3-6 months for general well being.. The first time I had it done was for my migraines and Alhamdulillah I didn't need to get it done for it again..
Subhan Allah, on every occasion, I have been cupped by different sisters, who were my friends...

- Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located and what services do you offer?

My clinic, Detox Therapy, is located in Manchester:

7 Grandale Street, Off Wilmslow Road, Rusholme, M14 5WS

The services offered at clinic are: Dry cupping, Wet cupping / Hijama, Traditional Chinese Medicine (Fire Cupping), Massages ( Only for Ladies)
