A Hijama Experience from Toronto, Canada

A Hijama Experience from Toronto, Canada by Sister Hira

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Sister Hira about her experience of hijama therapy in Toronto, Canada.

What condition did you suffer from (if any)?
Migraine headaches, vertigo (chronic dizziness) tinnitus (ringing in the ears) vestibular disorder

- Where do you live and where did you go for the hijama therapy?
I live in Toronto, Canada and went to a sister who does it in her home. I have also had dry cupping done at a clinic in Toronto called- Chaudhry Clinic.

- What other treatment did you try before trying hijama therapy?
I have tried Pharmaceutical drugs, acupuncture, massage, physiotherapy, chiropractor, dentist (for TMJ)

- What did the treatment involve and how long did it take?
It was very short and only took 20 minutes. It involved applying the cups, making the cuts and removing the old blood.

- How did you feel immediately after the treatment?
To be honest, physically I felt okay. I felt nervous but was surprised that it was so easy and comfortable.

- What was the result of the treatment, did you notice anything different straight after or some days after the treatment?
I noticed a difference within 3 days or so. I really did notice a dramatic difference after the 3rd treatment- my symptoms had changed and calmed down so much.

- What was your overall impression of the therapist and her practice? Did you feel safe at all times and was her equipment and procedures all hygienic / disposable?
As expected I was nervous for the 1st session, but Alhumdulillah the therapist was constantly reassuring me and she was constantly reminding me to make dua for myself and that I would be okay. She was very sterile, she constantly changed her gloves after every cup, she also has covers for all the cups she used, she used alcohol to sanitize everything. She opened a new blade in front of me. I felt that it was extremely hygienic.

- How did the therapist get to learn hijama therapy (was it a course she attended or was it something handed down from generation to generation in their family)?
She had learned it from back home in Egypt.

- Is there anything else you would like to add?
I would really encourage everyone to consider trying Hijama. If you look at pictures on the internet or if you google it, you might scare yourself- but it really is not painful at all. If anything we should be grateful to have the knowledge and ability to revive this sunnah as it truly has shifa in it. I also think you should not pay attention to what others say about trying new things- or alternative medicines, western medication does not work for everyone and only the sick person knows what they have to go through. Say Bismillah, put your trust in Allah and try it out. Be consistent in it and realize that there is no quick fix or magic pill.

Assalumu alaikum wa rahmatuLah wa barakatuhu

There are no Sunnah days for cupping (hijama) in this month of Safar as the 17th, 19th and 21st of Safar do not correspond with a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday.

The next best days for cupping (hijama) this month are the nearest Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to the 17th, 19th and 21st of Safar which are as follows:

Tuesday 16th Safar
1433 - 10th January 2012
Thursday 18th Safar 1433 - 12th January 2012
Monday 22nd Safar 1433 - 16th July 2012
Please kindly note that these dates are based on the new, lunar month according to the sighting of the new moon by the naked eye, as cupping (hijama) is a form of worship. These dates may sometimes vary from the calculated, lunar dates.

AlhamdIlah the Sunnah Days are also posted on our website every month:

Cupping (Hijama) In Its Time Is A Cure For Every Disease

Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

The Best Days For Cupping (Hijama)

Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach* is best. It increases the intellect and improves the memory. It improves the memory of the one memorising. So whoever is going to be cupped then on a Thursday in the name of Allaah.  Keep away from being cupped on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be cupped on a Monday or Tuesday. Do not be cupped on a Wednesday because it is the day that Ayoub was befallen with the trial. You will not find leprosy except (by being cupped) on Wednesday or Wednesday night." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3488)].
* 'alaa ar-reeq in arabic means to fast until after being treated with cupping. Once the treatment of cupping has been completed, one may eat and drink.
As for the Islamic day and night, the night enters before the day. So at sunset on Tuesday, Wednesday night comes in. Cupping (hijama) is best performed during the daytime between the athaan of fajr and the athaan of maghrib because yawm in arabic means daytime.
The Sunnah days for cupping (hijama) every month are when the 17th or 19th or 21st of the lunar month coincide with a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. These are the best and most beneficial days for cupping (hijama). If one is not able to be cupped on 17th, 19th or 21st (coinciding with Monday, Tuesday or Thursday) then any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday of the month.
Cupping (Hijama) For Women
Jaabir ibn Abdullah y reported Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) asked permission from the Messenger r to be treated with cupping (hijama). So the Messenger r ordered Abu Teeba t to cup her. Jaabir ibn Abdullah y said, " I think he r said that Abu Teeba t is her brother through breastfeeding or a young boy who didn't reach puberty". [Saheeh Muslim (5708), abu Dawud (4102), Saheeh ibn Maajah (3480)].

Dry and massage cupping may be performed at any time.

The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam)  said, "Whoever revives a Sunnah from my Sunnah and the people practise it, will have the same reward of those who practise it without their reward diminishing…"
[Sunan ibn Maajah (209)].
