Hijama Services in Kuwait by Abu Shofiyah Rasto Gunawan

The following is a guest blog-post in the form of a written interview by Abu Shofiyah Rasto Gunawan, a male cupping therapist from Kuwait.

1. Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?
I am a nurse. Since in the nursing college, I actually became interested in treatment based on Islamic divine revelation such as drinking honey and eating habbatus sauda (black seed) and Al Hijama until finally in the year 2007, there was one event Al Hijamah Training, in the town where I live in Cirebon, Indonesia. A qualified Ustadz named Kathur Suhardi who teaches how to do Hijama with good technique and refers to medical standards.

Since then I started doing Al Hijama for my family and friends. Amazingly the results were very good, most of them feel their fitness and wellbeing return.

One year later, a lot of friends who wanted to have Al Hijama done started coming to me and after that, usually they tell others and recommend Al Hijama as a therapy to try to overcome their health problems or at least in order to apply the sunnah of our noble Prophet peace be upon him.

I am very pleased also that Al Hijama is very closely related to my profession as a nurse. In Hospital I suggest to many patients to do Al Hijama as well as taking their prescribed medicines by the doctor.

2. What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?
I have treated mild high blood pressure, for example 140/100 mmHg and mild increase in cholesterol level and lower back pain.

3. And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?
Some problems that I frequently handle include: acute and chronic headache, asthma, hypertension and hypotension, stiff neck, back pain, lower back pain, leg pain including knee problems and numbness, arthritis, haemorrhoid and allergy (food and weather).

Almost all the problems I handled shows good results, some of which in fact show a result straight away as in the case of hypertension and hypotension, after Hijama usually the blood pressure becomes close to normal BP 120/80 mmHg, even the little cases (borderline) became perfectly normal. Subhaanallah wal hamdulillah. And in the case of stiff neck, after hijama usually the patient will feel light and free, as well as patients with back pain.

But if the problem has been longstanding, the result is felt usually after a bit longer eg. about a week and some even a month for recovering.

Amazingly, all my patients in therapy, alhamdulillah, sensed something different about their bodies, they feel light and fresh, even some of them who feel lost weight after hijamah because the body feels lighter. That is how I have myself felt after my first time of hijama.

4. Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)
I recommend doing Al Hijama as a preventative therapy, at least once or twice in a year and select the day and date according to the sunnah for best result. But those who have problems with high blood sugar, I recommend once every two months if doing at the same point. If someone has many problems, then it should be done every month on certain points.

In a lifetime, at least do Al Hijama once in order to practice the sunnah of our beloved prophet peace be upon him.

5. As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?
For myself, I have had Al Hijama done by one of my friends. It was for reducing my blood pressure and cholesterol, headache and preventative purposes.

6. What is the overall prevalance of hijama therapy in Kuwait? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?
As I know, in Kuwait most of the Hijama they are doing in their private house, not in clinics nor hospitals. There are many Hijama Therapists in Kuwait but it is still not available in any hospital. We hope in the future it will be recognized and approved by the goverment. Amin.

7. Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located in Kuwait?
I am living in Hawally Block 12, Street 140, At Al Bahman Bldng No 1143, 4th floor, Flat No. 16
Telephone: +96566646806
Email : bindasmin@yahoo.com
Blog : www.islamic-therapy.blogspot.com

8. Is there anything else you would like to add?
Al Hijama is one of Prophetic sunnah. I recommend to all Muslims to do Hijama at least once in lifetime as prevention. And if someone wants to do Hijama during Ramadhan, do it only if it is really very urgent/emergency, otherwise do Hijama one or two week after Eid Al Fithr for the best treatment and result.

A Hijama Experience with a Practitioner of Chinese Medicine in Toronto, Canada

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with a female hijama patient about her experience of hijama therapy in Toronto, Canada.

- What condition did you suffer from (if any)?

No serious medical condition, but mainly for the sunnah, general well-being

- Where do you live and where did you go for the hijama therapy?
I live in Toronto, Canada and I went to
The Best of Chinese Medicine www.bestofchinesemedicine.com

- What did the treatment involve and how long did it take?
I should mention that when I first called around it seemed like what was common was doing cupping as a form of massage. However, I also asked people if they would do blood-letting in addition to cupping, and the receptionist in this place called the doctor on the line, and she agreed to do it at my request.

As this was my first visit, she first did an assessment. Basically she made me fill out a questionnaire and then asked some questions about any medical concerns. I am sure this is pretty routine.

Then she assessed my "meridians". Basically she applied light pressure with her fingers to certain places, and I felt pain! She showed me on my hand how much pressure she was applying (not much), and explained that I had blockages in meridians which were causing this pain.

I had lots of questions, which I asked before and during the treatment. She was extremely pleasant and was happy to answer and explain.

She showed me the (disposable) needles that she would be using and then she explained each step of the way.

- How did you feel during and immediately after the treatment?
During the treatment, in one or two spots I could actually feel the blood draining (not painful, only sensation of draining). I also felt sore in a couple of places. I should mention that she said since this was my first visit and I was not used to it, she would be doing the cupping very lightly and not draining too much blood. She also told me that places with more blockage were drawing more blood. She must have done it very lightly because the next day I did not have the dark red marks that I had seen in pictures of hijamah.

- What was the result of the treatment, did you notice anything different straight after or some days after the treatment?
Immediately after the treatment and for the rest of the evening, I felt quite tired. The next day I felt really good, and it seemed noticeable.

- What was your overall impression of the therapist and her practice? Did you feel safe at all times and was her equipment and procedures all hygienic / disposable?
Yes. I like this doctor, she has a really good bedside manner, she was so receptive to my questions and did not mind providing explanations about all I asked.

The place is very clean and it is generally for Chinese Medicine, they had other things to offer but I did not pay too much attention as I was uninterested.

Of course, she practices Chinese medicine, so her assessment is based on meridians and I don't know how hijamah works otherwise, although being a non-Muslim she does not know the sunnah sites or days obviously http://www.islam-qa.com/en/ref/66144 (she may not know the sunnah days/ times, but if we do we can book appointments accordingly)

And she also does acupuncture although she did not do that for me. But she put in a plug for Acupuncture, showing me the needle and telling me the difference.

- How did the therapist get to learn hijama therapy (was it a course she attended or was it something handed down from generation to generation in their family)?
She completed her Chinese medical degree from Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). She also teaches Acupuncture and TCM in Toronto. Her info is on her website.

- What is the overall prevalence of hijama therapy in Canada? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?
I don't think it is available in mainstream hospitals/ clinics. I understand there are a couple of male practitioners in Toronto, however I have not come across a female practitioner before and have still to hear of a Muslimah practitioner.

- Is there anything else you would like to add?
I have never done hijamah before as I was unable to find a female practitioner. However, I spoke to my teacher (who has taken hijamah treatment from a Muslim) and she explained that the Islaamic way of hijamah involves making small cuts with a blade rather than a needle and that much more blood is let.

However, you can see on this site http://kocabas2.tripod.com/id1.html that needles could also be used.

If there is any hijamah practitioner who also has some religious education perhaps they could throw some light on whether taking treatment from a non-Muslim (who is not aware of the days/ times nor the sites of placing cups according to the sunnah) whether that treatment would be considered sunnah.

As well, if anyone visiting this blog knows of a Muslimah practitioner in Toronto, I hope they will provide the contact info.

Hijama Services in Singapore

Hijama Services in Singapore by Hassan Bin Sulaiman

The following is a guest blog-post in the form of a written interview by Hassan Bin Sulaiman, a male cupping therapist from Singapore.

- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?
Before I came to know about Hijama I was a medium or so-called spiritual healer. One day my father had a stroke and I wasn’t able to cure him and 4 months later he died. I was sad and determined to find a method that can prevent stroke. Usually it started with hypertension but my father didn't have that. He was just a heavy smoker. During my 1st day lesson I met with a stroke patient who recovered from it through the treatment by Hijama. From there I pursued to study it further. We need to introduce this Sunnah to the Muslims many of whom I can see do not know of its existence.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialize / had the most experience in?
Gout and hypertension.

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?
At any time for the first timer, usually the blood pressure will go down by ten points. Tips will be given pertaining to prevention of recurrence. We will advise on supplements that have to be taken. Usually 3 sessions are enough to bring down to 124/86 from 174/95.

As for gout, we do not know what causes gout. It is the chemical call Purine which can be found in all kind of nuts, animal organs and other vegetables. It cannot be processed and will be thrown into the blood. Since it is crystal-like and is heavy it will normally goes down to the legs and that how it start. We will usually do the cupping on some part of the legs in order to remove the acidic blood.

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)
As many of us had known that some sickness started with the thickening of the blood and the blood vessel. There are nine areas that need to be done which construe as “servicing”. One of it is where gathers 70 type of illness. By doing the servicing we have prevented the blood clothing and preventing us from the blockage we can lead to other major illness. Servicing include the clearing of liver, lungs, heart, kidneys. It is advisable to do 3 months once, followed by 6 month and 1 year. When we found that the patient requires cupping done on the head, we will advise. If not it can be done once in his life time or twice if necessary.

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and was what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

I had done on my head twice in 6 months. The first time the blood was quite thick but dark red. The second was just liquid light red blood. I have trained my 3 daughters. 4 month once we do the servicing but at times as and when required.

- Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located?
I reside at Block 429, Bukit Panjang Ring Road, #07-715, Bukit Panjang Ring Road, Singapore 670429.

Contact number: (+65) 9239 7412
Email: know.hijama@hotmail.com
Websites: www.hshealththerapies.multiply.com and www.youtube.com/hijamateam

- Is there anything else you would like to add?
Most people tend to have wrong understanding about Hijama. Some have bad experience from those using the razor and others have wrong ideas. To them it is not inspirational but unaware that this is Sunnah and was recommended by Malaikat Jibril " Yaa Muhammad, ask your Ummah to perform Hijama". They might not be able to see drastic things happen in their lives but one thing for sure, one time done, it was able to clear the nine areas mentioned.

A Hijama experience from Malaysia

A Hijama experience from Malaysia by Normawati Non

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Normawati Non, a female hijama patient about her experience of hijama therapy in Selangor, Malaysia.

- What condition did you suffer from (if any)?
I used to suffer from severe headache, fatigueness, and once in a while sleeping disorder.

- Where do you live and where did you go for the hijama therapy?
I live in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor (about 30++km away from Kuala Lumpur). My close neighbour introduced me the hijama therapist who is willing to come all the way from Negeri Sembilan (which is over 80km away from my house) to perform the blood cupping process at the comfort of my living room. He is a very kind person.

- What other treatment did you try before trying hijama therapy?
As usual, the prescribed medicines from the doctor. At times, based on recommendations from friends, I also tried some herbs preparation. Results: Both modern and traditional remedies help only as long as you continue taking them. Once you stop, the problems come again. It's like taking pain killer regularly, which is not good for long term.

- What did the treatment involve and how long did it take?
There were three sessions altogether: The first session involved a 'current massage' to test the flex responses of the muscles in order to detect problematic area, when electric current flows into the body. Just a small amount of electricity is used and it is safe. Massage here is more like touching the surface of the skin and where necessary, some light squeezings at the hands, legs, neck and shoulders, heels, waist and back and all the related joints. I was surprised to see some muscles not giving appropriate responds (the therapist termed this as "sleeping muscles").

Second session in the blood cupping process. Once the therapist had identified areas to work on, he determined the number of cups required and where it should be located on the body. I have one cup at the back of my head, one at each side of the neck, five across the shoulder blades, one at each arm, and several others scattered at the back and both legs. The cups were replaced with new ones when bloods have filled in about a quarter of the cup.

Finally, when no more blood sucked into the cups, the therapist started again on the current massage. This time, the sleeping muscles responded accordingly when squeezed, which means the problematic areas have been successfully attended to. Alhamdulillah.

The whole processes took about 3 hours to complete.

- How did you feel immediately after the treatment?
I feel light-headed, and somehow refreshing, just like the feeling when you wake up in the morning after a beautiful uninterrupted sleep. The current massage really helped. Alhamdulillah.

- What was the result of the treatment, did you notice anything different straight after or some days after the treatment?
Alhamdulillah, to this day when I am sharing this experience with all, I have not yet had any severe headache like I used to. I realised that this development turned me a much happier person, more energy and ideas, less fatigue, so less mood swings as well! Alhamdulillah!

- What was your overall impression of the therapist and his practice? Did you feel safe at all times and was his equipment and procedures all hygienic / disposable?
I was, at the beginning, a bit curious with the current massage. I was worried the practice could be dangerous and harmful. But the therapist gave some assuring words that he has been practicing the massage for more than ten years now and that so far no unwanted event occured. Other than that, I was excited to try the blood cupping. Yes, I do feel safe at all times during cupping. I am very satisfied with the cleanliness of the equipment and procedures.

- How did the therapist get to learn hijama therapy (was it a course he attended or was it something handed down from generation to generation in their family)?
The knowledge was passed down to him, from his father and grandfather. He has been practising blood cupping for more than 17 years now. Many people from all over Malaysia who are aware of the goodness of blood cupping would come and seek treatment from him. There was a case where he helped a man recover from paralysis four days after he was attacked by stroke.

- As a country with a large Muslim population, what is the overall prevalence of hijama therapy in Malaysia? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?
Blood cupping treatment is well known and also well accepted here in Malaysia. Even the doctors believe in the healing properties. There are many clinics that promote blood cupping. But then, this sunnah is more popular amongst the men. Women are more shy and some of them fear the treatment would result in unbearable pain.

- Is there anything else you would like to add?
I'd like to share this tips based on my experience:
1) I was asked to fast two hours before the treatment, the purpose is to avoid the existence of carbohydrate in blood.
2) I was not allowed to take a bath/shower immediately after the treatment. The cold water will prevent new blood circulation smoothly to skin. Allow for several hours before take a bath/shower.
3) The treatment will make you feel sleepy a bit. Nevertheless, try not to take a nap during the day for 3 consecutive days after the treatment. It has something to do with replenishing new blood in the body, but I was unsure how to explain it.

Hijama Services in Romania

Hijama (Cupping) in Romania by Pirnevan Constantin

The following is a guest blog-post in the form of a written interview by Pirnevan Constantin, a male cupping therapist from Romania.

- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is PIRNEVAN CONSTANTIN. In the last 6 years along with my wife I took a course in the domain of therapy and we opened our own cabinet where we work as therapists. Qualifications: Therapist MASSAGE-REFLEXO-THERAPY (I am one of the very few therapists that use cupping). I live in Romania. I have three children. I am 51 years. In March this year on your site, I read the interview with Br. Shami of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (Hijamah in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia - by Hasan Shami). I wrote an email. Br. Shami answered me, and he became my master. Brother Shami is a teacher inspired by God. I have all respect and consideration for brother Shami.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

I run Hijama for detoxification. I treat disease such as: hypertension, cholesterol, migraine, back pain.

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

Hijama is the best remedy for the earth. When I do Hijama I feel I attain the divine!

We had patients from Germany, who felt great after hijama!

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?

Hijama when combined with massage, reflexotheraphy and herbs becomes more powerful. Everyone needs Hijama after 2-3 months. (Four times per year). We manufacture the septic blood very quickly.

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

For myself, I take Hijama, once a month, it is not specific for a certain condition, I have trained my wife and she is now well experienced, so my Hijama is performed by her.

My wife performs Hijama for women!

- What is the overall prevalance of hijama therapy in Romania? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative therapy?

I am the first therapist who uses the process of hijamah in Romania. Cupping is not available in hospitals and clinics. Only a few certified therapists use dry cupping (Chinese system).

In Romania there is an Islamic organization formed by students, businessmen, doctors from Arab countries, on behalf of this organization are the Islamic League in Romania. I got in touch with these gentlemen and they sent me the book of Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah “Medicine prophetic” translated in Romanian.

- Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located?

I live in the west part of Romania. Village name is Sambateni. Nearest town is called ARAD (ARAD is located 15 km from my village).

- Is there anything else you would like to add?

My dream is to make known this kind of therapy in my country. I want to write a booklet about Hijama. If someone can help me with information material is welcome!

Thank you master, Hasan Mahmood Shami! May the Lord guide you forever and help you with whatever He knows you need.

Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

The Best Days For Cupping (Hijama)

Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach* is best. It increases the intellect and improves the memory. It improves the memory of the one memorising. So whoever is going to be cupped then on a Thursday in the name of Allaah. Keep away from being cupped on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be cupped on a Monday or Tuesday. Do not be cupped on a Wednesday because it is the day that Ayoub was befallen with the trial. You will not find leprosy except (by being cupped) on Wednesday or Wednesday night." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3488)].

* 'alaa ar-reeq in arabic means to fast until after being treated with cupping. Once the treatment of cupping has been completed, one may eat and drink.

As for the Islamic day and night, the night enters before the day. So at sunset on Tuesday, Wednesday night comes in. Cupping (hijama) is best performed during the daytime between the athaan of fajr and the athaan of maghrib because yawm in arabic means daytime.

The Sunnah days for cupping (hijama) every month are when the 17th or 19th or 21st of the lunar month coincide with a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. These are the best and most beneficial days for cupping (hijama). If one is not able to be cupped on 17th, 19th or 21st (coinciding with Monday, Tuesday or Thursday) then any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday of the month.

Cupping (Hijama) While fasting Or In The State Of Ihram

Abdullah ibn Abbas y reported that the Messenger r was cupped on his head for a unilateral headache while he was in Ihraam. [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5701)].

Abdullah ibn Abbas y reported that the Messenger r was cupped while he was fasting. [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5694)].

Anas ibn Maalik y was asked: "Did you dislike cupping for the fasting person?" He said, "No except for the reason of one becoming weak." [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (1940)].

This is not affected by the hadeeth, "The cupper and the one being cupped have broken their fast." [Saheeh see Irwaa al-Ghaleel (931)]. This is because the hadeeth is abrogated as Sheikh al-Albaani and ibn Hazm (may Allah have mercy upon them) showed by the following hadeeth:

Abu Sa'eed al-Khudhree t said, "The Messenger r validated cupping for the fasting person." [Saheeh see Irwaa al-Ghaleel (4/74)].

It appears that cupping (hijama) is allowed but disliked as Anas ibn Maalik y mentioned because the fasting person becomes weak if they perform cupping (hijama) and Allah knows best.

Dry and massage cupping may be performed at any time.

Cupping Therapy for Lower Back Pain by Anjum Shahzad

Cupping Therapy for Lower Back Pain by Anjum Shahzad

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Anjum Shahzad - a male cupping therapist based in London, England, about his experience of treating his lower back pain with hijama which inspired him to become a hijama therapist.

- What condition did you suffer from?

Lower Back Pain was a problem I had for many years. This was due to my lifestyle choices. I'd drive for an hour to work and back and I'd sit at work , on a desk, for the whole day. With the routine alot of pressure was applied to my back and caused immense inconvenience and trouble.

- What other treatment did you try before trying hijama therapy?

I tried acupunture which I received mixed results. Any relief was short - lived. I needed something that was more permanent and long lasting. Also I was taking pain killers which didn't resolve the issue - it just numbed the pain.

- What did the treatment involve for lower back pain?

Focusing on the pain area, certain meridian points (energy) are treated. Here clot is removed which contains inflamed blood as a result of pain. Also pressure is released which re-balances the energy on the lower back area due to stress and awkward positioning because of unhealthy lifestyle choices. The aim is to cause balance and order in the body - to bring it back to its default , optimum condition.

- What was the result?

The result is lower back feels light, pain relief and all round comfortable feeling on the body.

As a result of pain relief , it strengthened my belief in this wonderful treatment. It inspired me to become a hijamah therapist with the aim to help people regardless of race, creed and religious viewpoints to lead healthier lives with the use of alternative, natural and effective treatment. This treatment is Hijamah - Alhumdulillah!

- Where do you live and what other services you provide?

I am based in East London and also provide home visits to treat all kinds of symptoms including lower back pain. Due to demand, I also provide ruqyah treatment in the form of honey mixture with the ingredients that are sunnah of Prophet pbuh and it has ruqyah blown on it to provide protection from black magic, evil eye and jinns.
