An introduction to Al-Hijamah: Cupping Therapy by Kaleem Ullah of The British Cupping Society
Thursday, 17 January 2008

...al-Hijamah is an authentic tradition of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that has been used throughout history...

Introduction
Allah the Most High stated in surah An-Najm:

And he does not speak of his own desire. It is but an inspiration inspired. Taught to him by the firm and powerful1

and in surah Al-Hashr, The Almighty says,

And whatsoever the messenger brings forth to you, then accept it, and whatever he keeps from you, then abstain from it! And Fear Allah, he is firm in judgement2

From the above translation of the verses, we have established that anything attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which is known to be correct, we must accept it as part of Islam and the Sunnah. The Prophet Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him) said “There is not a single disease for which there is not a cure”, and we all know that there is no cure for death. One of the many remedies the Blessed Prophet informed us about was that of Al-Hijamah or Cupping Therapy as it known in the west. There are numerous ahadith concerning Al-Hijamah; many are considered sahih (authentic) whereas the authenticity of some has been questioned by scholars such as shaikh Nasir-ud-Deen Al-Albani and shaikh Abu Bakr Al-Jaza'iri. However, what is accepted unanimously is that Al-Hijamah was practiced by the Prophet (saw) and he encouraged others to do so. It is also documented that he paid the cupper his wages.

So what exactly is Al-Hijamah?
Cupping is an ancient method of treatment that has been used in the treatment and cure of a broad range of conditions throughout the Eastern and Western cultures of the world. Conditions such as blood related disorders; haemophilia and hypertension for example, rheumatic conditions ranging from arthritis, sciatica, back pain and migraines through to psycho-social applications in the treatment of anxiety and general physical and mental well-being. Traditional theories advocate that the primary aim of Cupping is to extract blood that is believed to be harmful from the body which in turn rids the body of potential harm from symptoms leading to a reduction in well-being. To date there are no scientifically approved research trials anywhere in the world which investigated the impact of Cupping at a physiological level, although numerous small scale studies have been done promoting the benefits of Cupping for various diseases. In the West, the first and only published research trial to have explored the impact of Cupping at a functional level was done by a research team at Kings College, London (British Cupping Society). This research looked at the effect of Cupping on Knee Pain, the results of which are available here.

History and origins of Cupping Therapy
Traditionally, Cupping Therapy has been practiced in most cultures in one form or another. In the UK the practice of Cupping Therapy also dates back a long way with one of the leading medical journals ‘The Lancet’ being named after this practice. A lancet is a piece of surgical equipment that was traditionally utilised to release excess blood i.e. venesection and to prick boils. The Arabic name for Cupping Therapy is Al-Hijamah which means to reduce in size i.e. to return the body back to its natural state. The practice of Al-Hijamah has been part of Middle-Eastern cultural practice for thousands of years with citations dating back to the time of Hippocrates (400 BC). Of the Western world, the first to embrace Cupping Therapy were the ancient Egyptians, and the oldest recorded medical textbook, Ebers Papyrus, written in approximately 1550 BC in Egypt mentions cupping (Curtis, 2005). Cupping Therapy can be divided into two broad categories: Dry Cupping and Wet Cupping. Dry Cupping Therapy tends to be practiced more commonly in the Far-East whereas Wet Cupping is favoured in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

Indications for Cupping Therapy
Traditionally it has been regarded as an effective treatment for a number of musculo-skeletal conditions as well as a general measure to maintain and promote well-being. Therefore Cupping Therapy is indicated for a broad spectrum of problems ranging from blood disorders, pain relief, inflammatory conditions, mental and physical relaxation, varicose veins and deep tissue massage, improvement in fertility levels to name but a few.

Contra-indications and Precautions to treatment
Cupping Therapy has no major side effects aside from minimal discomfort due to the method of application of skin cuts to the patient. In cases where the patient’s pain threshold is low, a local anaesthetic is usually administered. Also other possible minor side effects that may occur is the feeling of slight light headedness post Cupping Therapy, this is similar to the sensation one feels after having had blood taken from the doctor, as Cupping Therapy encourages blood flow to the cupped region (hyperaemia), one may therefore feel warmer and hotter as a result of vasodilatation (widening of blood vessel) taking place and slight sweating may occur. Again this can be attributed to sound scientific rationale and there is no cause for concern.

Pregnant women or menstruating women, cancer (metastatic) patients and patients with bone fractures or muscle spasms are also believed to be contra-indicated. Also, Cupping Therapy cannot be applied to a site of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), where there are ulcers, arteries or places where a pulse can be felt (Chirali, 1999,).

Contrary to some claims, Cupping therapy cannot cure all diseases, and the mere fact that the Prophet (saw) utilised this treatment doesn’t promote its value to a universal cure. Indeed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed there was ‘cure in it’ and we should thus attempt to attain maximum benefit from it, and he never said to 'cure all illnesses from it’. Therefore it is the responsibility of the practitioner to be medically educated and well versed with the practice of al-Hijamah and the indications/contra-indications a treatment like Hijamah has. Although the practice of al-Hijamah should be advocated and the practice of the great Sunnah re-established, caution needs to be exercised against false attributions to the potential of Cupping Therapy. The Blessed Prophet warned us “He who introduces something new to Islam, which is not of it, will have it rejected’.

Summary
In summary, al-Hijaamah is an authentic tradition of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that has been used throughout history. There is volume of anecdotal literature present however few scientific trials have investigated the effect of Cupping at various levels to the health. Evidence thus far points favourably for the use of Cupping as a treatment tool for a spectrum of medical ailments.

We pray to Allah to give us the ability to apply the knowledge he has given us in the best possible manner and that we continue to seek a better understanding in order to find cures for the illnesses he tests us with.

And the best knowledge is with Allah, the Almighty.

Hijama in Mauritius by Mufti Toilebouddine Hurroo

Hijama in Mauritius by Mufti Toilebouddine Hurroo

The following is a guest blog-post in the form of a written interview by Mufti Toilebouddine Hurroo, a male cupping therapist from Port Louis, Mauritius.

- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

I, Mufti Toilebouddine Hurroo studied at the Islamic University Jamia Banory Town Karachi Pakistan, from 1994 to 2006. I began my Mawlana course which usually takes 8 to 10 years. Upon completion of the Mawlana course, I obtained a scholarship to study Mufti which usually takes up another 2 to 4 years. The course is equivalent to a PHd Specialization in Fiqh and by definition, a mufti is an Islamic scholar who is an interpreter or expounder of Islamic law (the Shariah). A muftiat or diyanet is a council of muftis. These individuals and councils are capable of issuing fataawa (plural of "fatwa"). [from wikipedia].

After my Islamic studies, I and my wife have been studying and practicing hijamah with Dr. Amjad Ahsan Ali and are both certified to practice hijamah.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?
We treat diseases such as diabetic, varicose, cholesterol, migraine and witchcraft (evil-eyes ) etc.

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

Yes for example (a) a patient paralysed (stroke) for six years started to walk after doing hijamah (b) another one a tourism girl from Russia for 23 years was bald, after the treatment hair started to grow on her head (six months later), (c) many patients suffering from diabeties come for treatments, after a period of time (twenty days, one month depending on the patient), they stop taking their medical treatment after doing hijamah.

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

We have different recommendation depending on the illnesses the patients have, (a) chronic diseases patient are treated each 3 months (b) those persons not maintaining a healthy diet or tensed we treat after 6 months (C) a normal person who is not suffering any illnesses usually on a yearly basis.

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

For instance myself I used to wear spectacles because my eyesight was very weak . hence (3) months consecutively ( lunar calendar 17,19,21 acording to hadith ) after practice the sunnah I stopped using spectacles it has been one an a half years. My wife usually treats me

- Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located in Mauritius?
Treatment cabinet find in Port-Louis capital city of MAURITIUS, and at my residence , permit approved by the (ministry of health of Mauritius)
Hijamah is a sunnah, other religious people in Mauritius have started to follow this treatment, we work in a hygienic environment most important thing after treating a patient all the equipments used such as cupping-glasses, cotton, blades are disposed ,to ensure the patients that those equipments will not be used again.

When pursuing my studies I was taught that once an equipment having blood on it ,it is impossible to clean it, although it has been washed by (boiling-water, alcohol, capsules etc.) after two or three hours virus (HEPATITS B or C) are formed on it that why we must get rid of them.

We have also patients from different countries like Reunion-island, Madagascar, S.Africa, Dubai, Russia, England,France, Morocco.

- Is there anything else you would like to add?
Please sir make duah for me I have an intend to construct a small clinic of hijamah in Mauritius thanks JAZAK-ALLAH

BismiLah Arrahmaan Arraheem

Assalumu alaikum wa rahmatuLah wa barakatuhu

Please accept our sincerist apologies for the delay in sending out our monthly hijama Sunnah days. This was due to a technical problem which alhamdIlah has now been resolved.

The Sunnah days for wet cupping (hijama) in this month of Shabaan are as follows:

Thursday 17th Shabaan 1431 - 29th July 2010

Monday 21st Shabaan 1431 - 2nd August 2010

Please kindly note that these dates are based on the new, lunar month according to the sighting of the new moon by the naked eye, as cupping (hijama) is a form of worship. These dates may sometimes vary from the calculated, lunar dates.
AlhamdIlah the Sunnah Days are also posted on our website every month:

http://www.healthmeanswealth.co.uk/index.php?pr=Sunnah_Days

Cupping (Hijama) In Its Time Is A Cure For Every Disease

Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

The Best Days For Cupping (Hijama)

Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach* is best. It increases the intellect and improves the memory. It improves the memory of the one memorising. So whoever is going to be cupped then on a Thursday in the name of Allaah. Keep away from being cupped on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be cupped on a Monday or Tuesday. Do not be cupped on a Wednesday because it is the day that Ayoub was befallen with the trial. You will not find leprosy except (by being cupped) on Wednesday or Wednesday night." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3488)].

* 'alaa ar-reeq in arabic means to fast until after being treated with cupping. Once the treatment of cupping has been completed, one may eat and drink.

As for the Islamic day and night, the night enters before the day. So at sunset on Tuesday, Wednesday night comes in. Cupping (hijama) is best performed during the daytime between the athaan of fajr and the athaan of maghrib because yawm in arabic means daytime.

The Angels Recommending Cupping (Hijama)

Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "I did not pass by an angel from the angels on the night journey except that they all said to me: Upon you is cupping (hijama), O Muhammad." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3477)].

In the narration reported by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allaah be pleased with him) the angels said, "Oh Muhammad, order your Ummah (nation) with cupping (hijama)." [Saheeh Sunan Tirmidhee (3479)].

The Sunnah days for cupping (hijama) every month are when the 17th or 19th or 21st of the lunar month coincide with a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. These are the best and most beneficial days for cupping (hijama). If one is not able to be cupped on 17th, 19th or 21st (coinciding with Monday, Tuesday or Thursday) then any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday of the month.

Dry and massage cupping may be performed at any time.

We pray you find this information helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries, comments or feedback.

JazakAllah khair for your support.

The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever revives a
Sunnah from my Sunnah and the people practise it, will have the same reward of those who practise it without their reward diminishing…"
[Sunan ibn Maajah (209)].

Please add us to your 'contacts' so that our newsletters are not received as spam.

JazakAllah khair.

Some Frequently Asked Questions on Hijama by Shaikh Musa Nasr

Questions and answers on cupping (hijama) by a cupping (hijama) expert - compiled by Health Means Wealth

Health Means Wealth

Assalumu alaikum

AlhamdIlah we asked Shaikh Musa Nasr who is a hijama specialist, the following questions on hijama, as published on our website at the following link:
http://healthmeanswealth.co.uk/FAQ.php

FAQ

Questions and answers on cupping (hijama) by a cupping (hijama) expert.

Question 1: Which are the best days of the week for cupping (hijama)? Can cupping (hijama) be performed on 17th, 19th and 21st if they coincide with a Wednesday?

Answer: The best days for cupping (hijama) are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and there is a prohibition for cupping (hijama) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. However, cupping (hijama) can be performed, out of necessity or due to sickness, on these days. As for Wednesday, then cupping (hijama) is not allowed to be performed at all.

If the 17th, 19th and 21st coincide with a prohibited day such as a Wednesday then one must not perform cupping (hijama) on this day due to the prohibition. If the 17th, 19th and 21st day coincide with Friday, Saturday or Sunday then you can perform cupping (hijama) due to a (dire) need. The Messenger r said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

Question 2: What is the ruling for performing cupping (hijama) on Wednesday and Wednesday night (which precedes it)?

Answer: Cupping (hijama) is prohibited on Wednesday due to a strong prohibition of cupping (hijama) on that day and this includes its’ night.

Question 3: What is the ruling for performing cupping (hijama) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and their nights?

Answer: There are narrations prohibiting cupping (hijama) on these days. However, when one is sick or is in dire need then cupping can be performed on these days.

Question 4: What is the ruling for performing cupping (hijama) on the nights of Monday, Tuesday and Thursday?

Answer: It is allowed to perform cupping (hijama) on these days due to no narrations authentically prohibiting these days.

Ibn Umar y reported that the Messenger r said, "Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach is best. In it is a cure and a blessing, increases memory and intellect, Perform cupping upon the blessing of Allaah on Thursday. Keep away from Cupping on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Perform Cupping on Mondays and Tuesdays for they are the days Allaah cured Ayub from a trial. Keep away from cupping on Wednesday for it was the day Ayub was inflicted (with a desease) and Leprosy is a result for cupping on Wednesday or the night of Wednesday" [Hadeeth Hasan as mentioned by Sheikh Al-Albaani in Saheeh Al-Jaami’].

Question 5: Are these following five places from the Sunnah:

a)1,55 al-Kaahil.

b)43, 44 Al-Akhda'ain.

c) Top of the head Umm Mugheeth.

Answer: These are from the main points for cupping (hijama) and they are reported in the Sunnah. Cupping (hijama) is performed wherever it is required, such as the top and bottom of one's back, the middle of one's shin, or the back of one's heel.

Question 6: Are there any other Sunnah points for cupping (hijama)?

Answer: It is reported that the Messenger r performed cupping (hijama) at the back of the heel due to pain being present there.

Question 7: Is it from the Sunnah to keep repeating the cupping (hijama) every month or every year if the person is ill or not ill?

Answer: For a normal person it is good to do cupping (hijama) every three months. As for the sick person then every month because cupping (hijama) is considered from the Prophetic medicine and he r advised people to perform it. So it is a cure as well as implementing the Sunnah of the Messenger r.

Question 8: Is it from the Sunnah to have a bath after cupping (hijama) and after how many hours should one take a bath?

Answer: It is not from the Sunnah to have a bath after cupping (hijama) and also a person may be harmed such as the wound may become infected. Therefore, bathing should be after the wound has healed a day or two after cupping (hijama).

Question 9: Are there any signs that show that a person has magic, jealousy toward him/her, or evil eye after cupping (hijama)?

Answer: In most cases the person who has magic done to him/her will vomit after cupping (hijama) and sweat much. As for the latter two then they will find it very difficult to continue cupping (hijama).

Question 10: What do the following signs in the blood mean; bubbles, strands of blood, white strands, blood bubbling over?

Bubbles: Could be due to air coming out due to hair or a broken cup.

Strands of blood: Proof that the blood is not clean or the blood is clotting quickly due to blood clots in the body.

White strands: This seems to be due to a particular disease and clearly the blood is not clean.

Blood Bubbling Over: Could be due to high blood pressure.
