Hijama in Yorkshire, England

Hijama in Yorkshire, England by Ashiq Hussain Qadri Attari

The following is a guest blog-post in the form of a written interview by Ashiq Hussain Qadri Attari, a male cupping therapist from Yorkshire, England.

[Q]Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

As-salamu-'alykum-wa-rahmatullaahi-wa-barakatuh to Brothers & Sisters
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger!!!

My Name is Ashiq Hussain Qadri Attari, I am 31 years of age, I follow the Sufi Order Qadiri: named after Hadhrat Sheikh Sayyid Abdul Qadir Jilani al-Hasanii al-Husainii. He was an authority in the Hanbali madhhab (school of sacred Muslim law) as well as the Shafi’i madhhab, and a chief exponent of the Ahl u’s-Sunnah wa’l Jama’ah (the people who follow the lifestyle of the Holy Prophet Muhammad and of his blessed Companions).

After experiencing my own personal illness and pain since the age of 16, I had a Hijama treatment & used other Prophetic Medicine, it helped me to the extent that I could lead a normal life. This made me more passionate about it and I wanted to bring this treatment to the rest. What initially caught my attention was the fact that something so simple was so effective & I was moved by it having a religious basis as our Messenger peace and blessings be upon him said, "Whoever revives a Sunnah from my Sunnah and the people practise it, s/he will have the same reward of those who practise it without their reward diminishing…" [Sunan ibn Maajah (209)]. This shows the importance and greatness of this Sunnah

[Q]- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

Hijama is a blessed medical cure for the one who has faith in it, and is especially effective when they have faith in it from the start, and not as a last resort when all else fails as is the case with most people. I specialise in all sorts of illnesses & conditions as hijama is a cure for every disease, The Messenger peace and blessings be upon him said, "Indeed in cupping (hijama) there is a cure." [Saheeh Muslim (5706)]. Hijama is the best remedy recommended and used by the Messenger, The Messenger peace and blessings be upon him said, "Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama)…" [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (5371)]..

[Q] -And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

In my experience Conditions & illnesses respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy, cupping is a very effective treatment for migraine headaches and high blood pressure, and a person can get cured with just one session, Pain is reduced in most cases immediatly, especially in sites of acute pain from strains and sports injuries. Chronic pain may require several sessions before any benefit is seen for certain ailments, however it is shown that pain relief is almost instant, Nothing is same for everyone & each person will be unique. According to the prophetic traditions (Sunnah) - 70 ailments are cured from one point at the base of the neck alone.

[Q] - Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

I would say use Hijama as general preventative therapy as it’s Benefits of Hijama are it Stimulates and strengthens the immune system; Enhances blood circulation; Stimulates tissues and internal organs; Improves physical and mental health conditions; Enhances general health of body; Reduces stress and depression by releasing chemicals in the brain; Allows tissues to release toxins by eliminating them through the surface of the skin; Is the best deep tissue massage; Brings blood and warmth to an affected organ and therefore promotes healing; Reduces unwanted side effects of drugs, removes their residue and reduces the risk of drug toxicity; Massage cupping over the digestive system stimulates the inside of the organs, their peristaltic movement and secretion of digestive fluids; strengthens the power of digestion and absorption of nourishment and the power of secretion; dry cupping is 10 times more effective than acupuncture; cupping works in a radius of 10cm and depth of 10-12cm; Massage cupping on the liver aids it to detoxify the body; Massage cupping over the back, revitalises the organs, improves blood circulation and is the equivalent of walking 2km.

The Messenger peace and blessings be upon him (used or recommended hijama for:Headaches: (Abu Dawud);
Magic: Ibn Al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) mentions that the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) was afflicted with magic and was cupped on the head to treat it. He also mentions that hijama is from the best of cures for magic if performed correctly (Zaad al Ma’aad).

Poison: Abdullah ibn Abbas t reported that a Jewish woman gave poisoned meat to the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) so he sent her a message saying, “What caused you to do that?” She replied, “If you really are a prophet then Allah will inform you of it and if you are not then I would save the people from you!” When the Messenger (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) felt pain from it, he performed cupping (Ahmad).

Strengthening One’s Intelligence and Memory: The Messenger peace and blessings be upon him said, “Cupping & improves the intellect and the memory &” (Ibn Majah)..

[Q] Is there anything else you would like to add?

We have established that anything attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which is known to be correct, we must accept it as part of Islam and the Sunnah. The Prophet Mohammed (peace and blessings be upon him) said “There is not a single disease for which there is not a cure”, and we all know that there is no cure for death. One of the many remedies the Blessed Prophet informed us about was that of Al-Hijamah or Cupping Therapy as it known in the west

Health Means Wealth

BismiLah Arrahmaan Arraheem

Assalumu alaikum wa rahmatuLah wa barakatuhu

There are no Sunnah days for cupping (hijama) in this month of Rajab as the 17th, 19th and 21st of Rajab do not correspond with a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday.

The next best days for cupping (hijama) this month are the nearest Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to the 17th, 19th and 21st of Rabea Al-Awwal which are as follows:

Tuesday 16th Rajab 1431 - Tuesday 29th June 2010

Thursday 18th Rajab 1431 - Thursday 1st July 2010

Monday 22nd Rajab 1431 - Monday 5th July 2010

Please kindly note that these dates are based on the new, lunar moon according to the sighting of the new moon by the naked eye, as cupping (hijama) is a form of worship. These dates may sometimes vary from the calculated, lunar dates.

AlhamdIlah the Sunnah Days are also posted on our website every month:

http://www.healthmeanswealth.co.uk/index.php?pr=Sunnah_Days

Cupping (Hijama) In Its Time Is A Cure For Every Disease

Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

The Best Days For Cupping (Hijama)

Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach* is best. It increases the intellect and improves the memory. It improves the memory of the one memorising. So whoever is going to be cupped then on a Thursday in the name of Allaah. Keep away from being cupped on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be cupped on a Monday or Tuesday. Do not be cupped on a Wednesday because it is the day that Ayoub was befallen with the trial. You will not find leprosy except (by being cupped) on Wednesday or Wednesday night." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3488)].

* 'alaa ar-reeq in Arabic means to fast until after being treated with cupping. Once the treatment of cupping has been completed, one may eat and drink.

As for the Islamic day and night, the night enters before the day. So at sunset on Tuesday, Wednesday night comes in. Cupping (hijama) is best performed during the daytime between the athaan of fajr and the athaan of maghrib because yawm in arabic means daytime.

Cupping (Hijama) For Women

Jaabir ibn Abdullah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) asked permission from the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) to be treated with cupping (hijama). So the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) ordered Abu Teeba (may Allaah be pleased with him) to cup her. Jaabir ibn Abdullah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said, " I think he (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said that Abu Teeba (may Allaah be pleased with him) is her brother through breastfeeding or a young boy who didn't reach puberty". [Saheeh Muslim (5708), abu Dawud (4102), Saheeh ibn Maajah (3480)].

The Sunnah days for cupping (hijama) every month are when the 17th or 19th or 21st of the lunar month coincide with a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. These are the best and most beneficial days for cupping (hijama). If one is not able to be cupped on 17th, 19th or 21st (coinciding with Monday, Tuesday or Thursday) then any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday of the month.

Dry and massage cupping may be performed at any time.

We pray you find this information helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries, comments or feedback.

JazakAllah khair for your support.

The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever revives a Sunnah from my Sunnah and the people practise it, will have the same reward of those who practise it without their reward diminishing…" [Sunan ibn Maajah (209)].

JazakAllah khair.

Case Study: Hijama for the management of Migraine by Dr Nazri Nizar

Hijama for the management of Migraine - a case study by Dr Nazri Nizar

The following is a hijama case study kindly contributed by Dr Nazri Nizar, a male cupping therapist from Colombo, Sri Lanka

A migraine is a severe, excruciating pain, lasting for hours or even days. In most cases, the symptom often precede / accompanied by a kind of sensory sign such as flashes of light, tingling in the arms and legs, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound etc.

Patient Name: Johanna from Germany
Age: 28
Sex: Female
Place of treatment: Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Case History: The patient has been suffering from Migraine since the age of 5 years. Stress was the likely cause that triggered a kind of emotional stress, due to frequent argument and fisticuffs between the parents. As a result the patient, who was a child at that time, having witnessed these flare ups, grew up in an hostile environment not conducive to a peaceful living background. Here we have to analyze the patient’s psychological state of mind which was in a highly disturbed state. Again Stress is the likely cause which subsequently converted to migraine over the period of time, is also linked with improper and untimely food intake or consuming too much junk food, child often being neglected due to mother being traumatized etc.

The patient has sought treatment regularly in her native Germany for the Migraine where she has undergone MRI scanning and other check-ups and continued on medication with little success. Later having moved to Abu Dhabi, she was advised by a collegue to try Kerala Ayurveda Therapy which was often in the form of oil head massage which gave her temporary relief but the symptoms remained intact. Her condition aggravated further due to stomach ulcer, blind spots, lack of sleep etc.

Treatment:
First of all after seeking Almighty Allaah’s blessings, The patient was advised to have her food early. Later in the evening, the patient was made to sit so as to carry out physical checks on nerve activity to ascertain the right place to administer Hijama.

After the hijama therapy was over, the patient was given a head massage using herbal oil for 20 minutes which proved to be very beneficial. The patient showed a sense of relief and told me that she felt as if a big boulder was removed from her head. Al Hamdu Lillaah, It is Allaah who decrees the cure.

After a period of two months, the patient had a recurrence of the migraine and on my second visit the same therapy was applied. Al Hamdu Lillaah ever since the second therapy was administered the patient has fully recovered and no recurrence of migraine so far. In her last communication with me in March 2010, she has fully recovered from migraine and feeling fine.

Al Hamdu Lillaah.
