BismiLah Arrahmaan Arraheem

Assalumu alaikum wa rahmatuLah wa barakatuhu

The Sunnah day for wet cupping (hijama) in this month of Rabee Ath-thaanee is as follows:

Tuesday 21st Rabee Ath-thaanee 1431 - 6th April 2010

AlhamdIlah the Sunnah Days are also posted on our website every month:

http://www.healthmeanswealth.co.uk/index.php?pr=Sunnah_Days

Cupping (Hijama) In Its Time Is A Cure For Every Disease

Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

The Best Days For Cupping (Hijama)

Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach* is best. It increases the intellect and improves the memory. It improves the memory of the one memorising. So whoever is going to be cupped then on a Thursday in the name of Allaah. Keep away from being cupped on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be cupped on a Monday or Tuesday. Do not be cupped on a Wednesday because it is the day that Ayoub was befallen with the trial. You will not find leprosy except (by being cupped) on Wednesday or Wednesday night." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3488)].

* 'alaa ar-reeq in Arabic means to fast until after being treated with cupping. Once the treatment of cupping has been completed, one may eat and drink.

As for the Islamic day and night, the night enters before the day. So at sunset on Tuesday, Wednesday night comes in. Cupping (hijama) is best performed during the daytime between the athaan of fajr and the athaan of maghrib because yawm in arabic means daytime.

Cupping (Hijama) For Women

Jaabir ibn Abdullah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) asked permission from the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) to be treated with cupping (hijama). So the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) ordered Abu Teeba (may Allaah be pleased with him) to cup her. Jaabir ibn Abdullah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said, " I think he (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said that Abu Teeba (may Allaah be pleased with him) is her brother through breastfeeding or a young boy who didn't reach puberty". [Saheeh Muslim (5708), abu Dawud (4102), Saheeh ibn Maajah (3480)].

The Sunnah days for cupping (hijama) every month are when the 17th or 19th or 21st of the lunar month coincide with a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. These are the best and most beneficial days for cupping (hijama). If one is not able to be cupped on 17th, 19th or 21st (coinciding with Monday, Tuesday or Thursday) then any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday of the month.

Dry and massage cupping may be performed at any time.

We pray you find this information helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries, comments or feedback.

JazakAllah khair for your support.

The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever revives a Sunnah from my Sunnah and the people practise it, will have the same reward of those who practise it without their reward diminishing…" [Sunan ibn Maajah (209)].

JazakAllah khair.

Hijama for the treatment of Knee Pain - by Kaleem Ullah

"Hijama for the treatment of knee pain" - by Kaleem Ullah

Interview with Kaleem Ullah, University of East Anglia, England.

Further to their previous post (entitled: A Cupping Therapy Workshop for Health Professionals in London, England), this is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Kaleem Ullah, one of the founders of British Cupping Society, and post-graduate student at University of East Anglia, England, and co-author of research entitled: "An investigation into the effect of Cupping Therapy as a treatment for Anterior Knee Pain and its potential role in Health Promotion."

Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up getting involved with hijama?

My name is Kaleem Ullah, I have a professional background in Physiotherapy and Public Health (MSc). I am currently studying Medicine at the University of East Anglia where I am in the latter stages of my medical education. I have a keen interest in Hejamah and in my spare time I worked along with a few colleagues to establish the British Cupping Society to further our aims.

Hejamah was introduced to me by a friend following a back problem I had that was untreatable by conventional medicine. I received one treatment session from a friend and the problem instantly subsided and never returned. I spoke to my lecturers at my university about this and they were impressed and challenged me to investigate the matter further. Since then I have attempted to practice, research, teach and advertise the practice of Hejamah.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions have you researched with regards to treatment with hijama/ wet-cupping?

Anterior Knee Pain was the condition that I had investigated for my Masters thesis; however we as a society and individuals have kept case studies of numerous other conditions.

- Please explain briefly how the studies were carried out? How many patients took part and how long did it take?

Initially, the study recruited more than 35 subjects, however on commencement, only 25 met the criteria and were eligible. The study began in 2005, and was completed in the summer of 2006.

- What was the outcome/conclusion of the study?

We wanted to investigate the effects of Hejamah on anterior knee pain, although the study used a small sample size, we found that all the subjects had shown significant improvements in their ranges of movement, pain scores and their perceptions of well being. These effects were maintained over a three week follow-up period.

- Are you planning any other hijama-related studies in the near future?

Yes insha’allah, we are planning to investigate different conditions affecting the body. Currently we are collecting data on case-studies and their follow-ups. Once I complete my medical education, I am hoping to be able to spare more time to conduct a large scale investigation on the effects of Hejemah at both clinical and physiological levels.

- If you have hijama done yourself, how often do you get it done, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

I am able to self treat using hejamah on parts of the body. The exception being the back and the head I suppose. I use Hejamah as and when necessary, as the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) recommended us to. I do not suffer from any chronic illness (alhmadulillah) but I do play contact sports regularly and find that Hejamah helps the recovery from knocks and bruises a lot better than most medication does.

- You are part of the British Cupping Society (BCS). Please tell us a bit more about that, how people can become members and what have you achieved so far?

The British Cupping Society (BCS) was established in 2008 by a group of Medical Professionals and Cupping Therapy (Al-Hejamah) experts in response to a growing interest. The BCS was the first society to conduct a scientific investigation into the effects of Cupping Therapy in the UK in 2005 which subsequently lead to wide television and press coverage (nationally and internationally). This was followed by a great demand and desire to establish a society that can deliver prophetic medicine professionally whilst catering for the public needs.

Purpose and aims: The purpose of the BCS is to provide leadership in the practice of Cupping Therapy. The aims of the BCS are to preserve, protect and promote the safe practice of Cupping through research and development for the benefit of the public. To further these goals, the BCS has continued to promote Hejamah (nationally and internationally) through seminars, workshops, television shows and at science conferences.

We are pleased to have built a strong reputation for what we do and have established very good relations with a number of leading Cupping therapy organisations nationally and internationally.

Structure: The BCS was founded and is currently managed by a team of qualified medical and health professionals and is an autonomous body. A council is elected and meets annually to address issues of hierarchy.

It is a non-profit organisation utilising all funds to promote the practice of Cupping Therapy through an array of activities including research, lectures, seminars, conferences and courses.

- Finally where can readers obtain or purchase your above research papers from?

Hijama for the treatment of Hairloss - by Anjum Shahzad

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Anjum Shahzad - a male cupping therapist based in London, England.

Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is Anjum Shahzad and I am a hijamah therapist. I have been practicing this therapy for almost a year now. I was taught and trained by Natural Health Natural Finest CMA regulatory body. I was first introduced to Hijamah by reading a book called Prophetic Medicine by Ibn Jawziyah (RA). However, I came into physical contact with it when I was treated for hairloss. Due to my enthusiasm of the Prophet's (pbuh) recommendation of this procedure in several hadith I really wanted to make a difference to my community and others by promoting good health & wellbeing.

My team includes female practitioners for the sisters. We also perform Ruqiyah services for treatment of black magic, jinns and evil eye.

`A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: "Angel Gabriel used to pronounce some words upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to relieve his pain. He used to say: "May you get relief from the pain, cured from the disease, and be protected from envy and evil eye by the virtue of Allah's Name." (Reported by Muslim)

What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialize / had the most experience in?

I have performed for all kinds of illnesses including, diabetes, hairloss, sciatica, depression, migraines, numbness, colds and flus, stomach indigestion, ulcers, arthritis, back pain, chronic fatigue syndrome and more. I also perform the sunnah points for general well being. I specialise in hair loss.

And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

Alhumdulillah Hijamah therapy is great for a wide range of illnesses and it is central to the well being of the immune system, circulatory, and respiratory system.

My analogy is the following: Its like getting your car serviced. The engine has its own mechanism of working but regularly the machine needs outside intervention in order for it to carry on working in its optimum condition.

This is like the body. Due to our ever increasing hectic lifestyles and intake of preservatives, chemicals in our diet and synthetic drugs (such as paracetamol), there's more of a build up of pathogens and toxins found in our bloodstream that weaken the organs and accelerate the aging process. The body doesn't get the best of our nutrients due to the congested blood. So this is where Hijamah helps - it removes these toxins, de-acidifies the blood, causes decongestion and flushes out waste products in the blood and produces "happy" hormones called endorphins making you feel more refreshed and relaxed.

Back pain, arthritis, diabetes and hair loss are some of the conditions where patients find great, amazing results from. Due to de-acidification inflammatory illness like sciatica and arthritis find pain relief.

People with migraines, stress, and anxiety find great relief from Hijamah

Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

Hijamah ideally shouldn't be performed more than once a month. For general well being I would recommend once every 3-4 months.

As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

I get hijamah done every three months. It is performed by one of my colleagues. I do it to increase and strengthen my immune systems from colds, flu and allergies.

Alhumdulillah I have cured my hair loss which I was suffering from for over 15 years (I am now 31) by performing hijamah directly on the scalp. Now I have thicker, stronger hair and do not suffer any loss.

Whereabouts is your clinic or practice located?

We are based in London. We have practices in the East, South and North of London. We refer patients depending on where they live. We perform home visits as well and can travel nationally.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Hijamah is a great therapy to perform as it is a divine instruction and recommendation from our beloved Prophet (pbuh).

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

(The Prophet said), "Healing is in three things: A gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire (cauterizing)." But I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with fire."

To perform this is not only good for illnesses and for general well being but it is also a Sunnah and great blessing too.
