Cupping (Hijama) In Its Time Is A Cure For Every Disease

Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever performs cupping (hijama) on the 17th, 19th or 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) then it is a cure for every disease." [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3861)].

The Best Days For Cupping (Hijama)

Ibn Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Cupping (hijama) on an empty stomach* is best. It increases the intellect and improves the memory. It improves the memory of the one memorising. So whoever is going to be cupped then on a Thursday in the name of Allaah. Keep away from being cupped on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Be cupped on a Monday or Tuesday. Do not be cupped on a Wednesday because it is the day that Ayoub was befallen with the trial. You will not find leprosy except (by being cupped) on Wednesday or Wednesday night." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3488)].

* 'alaa ar-reeq in Arabic means to fast until after being treated with cupping. Once the treatment of cupping has been completed, one may eat and drink.

As for the Islamic day and night, the night enters before the day. So at sunset on Tuesday, Wednesday night comes in. Cupping (hijama) is best performed during the daytime between the athaan of fajr and the athaan of maghrib because yawm in arabic means daytime.

Cupping (Hijama) Is A Preventative Medicine

Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever wants to perform cupping (hijama) then let him search for the 17th, 19th and 21st day (of the Islamic, lunar month) and let none of you allow his blood to rage (boil) such that it kills him." [Saheeh Sunan ibn Maajah (3486)].

Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "When the weather becomes extremely hot, seek aid in cupping (hijama). Do not allow your blood to rage (boil) such that it kills you." [Reported by Hakim in his 'Mustadrak' and he authenticated it and Imam ad-Dhahabi agreed (4/212)].

The Sunnah days for cupping (hijama) every month are when the 17th or 19th or 21st of the lunar month coincide with a Monday, Tuesday or Thursday. These are the best and most beneficial days for cupping (hijama). If one is not able to be cupped on 17th, 19th or 21st (coinciding with Monday, Tuesday or Thursday) then any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday of the month.

Dry and massage cupping may be performed at any time.

We pray you find this information helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries, comments or feedback.

JazakAllah khair for your support.

The Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Whoever revives a Sunnah from my Sunnah and the people practise it, will have the same reward of those who practise it without their reward diminishing…" [Sunan ibn Maajah (209)].

JazakAllah khair.

A Hijama experience from London, England

A Hijama experience from London, England - By Umm Ayub

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Umm Ayub about her experience of hijama therapy in London, England.

- What condition did you suffer from (if any)?

I don’t suffer nor do I have any health problems (Alhamdulillah) but I came across Hijama from a friend who highly praised the outcome of performing Hijama. This allowed me to embark on a journey of tracking down a therapist and I came across Sister Anisa Kissoon of Natural Health Natures Finest

- Where do you live and where did you go for the hijama therapy?

I reside in London (UK). For my first ever Hijama as stated I went to Sister Anisa Kissoon of Natural Health Natures Finest, it was performed in her house which is converted into a clinic, and had a rather large living room to accommodate many people, it was quite nice because the therapist explained every stage in detail prior to performing anything and also gave us a brief introduction on nutrition.

- What did the treatment involve?

The treatment involved learning about and carrying out wet-cupping on the main general spot on the back of the neck and learning the reasons why we should perform there.

- What was the result?

I felt some pain on my neck, the similitude of a graze, then a little faint. But after some light snack and drink I felt much better.

But I realised that night that I slept quite well and felt a little energetic throughout that month.

- What was your overall impression of the therapist and her practice?

The therapist was amazing, as she possessed a lot of knowledge in relation to her field and an added bonus was the aspect of health and fitness which she briefly explained. She left a lasting impression on all of us. I still call her till this date if I am in doubt, and Mashallah she is always at hand to reply to our concerns.

- How did the therapist get to learn hijama therapy (was it a course she attended or was it something handed down from generation to generation in their family)?

What amazed us all was the concept behind why she and her family wanted to build www.nhnf.co.uk . She suffered from health problems and medicine and other means of curing oneself did not work for her and she therefore started searching for answers and found Hijama, but what was more surprising and unique is that she truly wanted to revive the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw). And it is evident now in the UK (in London to be specific) that their work has not gone to waste and they are slowly but surely reviving the Sunnah by providing people with the key by which they can open many doors. With regards to what courses she has attended or undertaken, as far as I know the sister is fully qualified and is now running yearly professional, accredited courses in Hijama which can be viewed on their website www.nhnf.co.uk .

Hijama in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and in Hyderabad, India

Hijama in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and in Hyderabad, India - by Tanveer Ahmed

This is a guest-post in the form of a written interview with Tanveer Ahmed - a male cupping therapist based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

- Please give us a short introduction about yourself, and in particular how you ended up being a hijama therapist?

My name is Mohammed Tanveer Ahmed, I am an Indian by nationality and my birthplace is Hyderabad, India. I am currently working in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) since almost 21 years in many hospitals as a paramedic.

Since I had cupping therapy for my depression, neck pain and vertigo when I realized the result of hijama is excellent and unbelievable which kept me away from using medication. After that I decided to learn hijama as I had good medical background specially surgical side. After a lot of struggle I learned from Dr Abdul Jawad Al Sawi who is quite popular and a religious personality, at the same time I certified from Madina Munawara as a hijama therapist.

- What particular illnesses/ conditions (if any), do you specialise / had the most experience in?

Pain management, vertigo, depression, stress, migraine, sexual related problems.

- And do you find that in your experience, the conditions/illnesses that you have come across respond well to cupping (hijama) therapy? And if so, what are they?

Migraines, Pain management, depression, stress, sexual related problems. burning in the feet.

- Also what would you say about using cupping as a general preventative therapy and how often would you recommend this (once a month? once/twice a year?)

Yes, cupping is useful as a preventative therapy and I would advise this twice a year.

- As a hijama therapist, how often do you get hijama done yourself, and what for (if any specific condition) and who do you go to to get it done (since it is not an easy therapy to self-administer)?

Every six months prophylactic (ie as a preventative treatment) by my teacher Dr. Abdul Jawad.

-What is the overall prevalence of hijama therapy in Jeddah & in Hyderabad? Is it available in hospitals and clinics as a valid alternative / sunnah therapy?

If you ask me about Hyderabad India, it is available in many cupping centers practiced by Unani doctors. As about Saudi Arabia hijama therapy is banned by the Ministry of Health and only two or three centers in Madina Munawara have licenses for cupping therapy.

I visit India often to perform hijama in Hyderabad and nearby areas, although my basic aim was to educate people about this beautiful sunnah of our prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

- Do you have a clinic set up in Hyderabad?

Since my job is in Saudi Arabia it is not easy for me to manage a clinical setup in Hyderabad, I only go on visits every quarterly and ha a good tie-up with hospitals and medical centers.

Are you a hijama (cupping) therapist?

Are you a hijama (cupping) therapist?

Quick question: Are you a hijama therapist, or do you know of a local hijama therapist in your part of the world?

Reason for asking is two-fold:

1) Since starting this blog about a year ago to provide hijama-related information, we get many enquiries from different parts of the world, asking if we know their nearest local therapists. To date we are still trying to locate therapists in Bahrain, Kuwait and other parts of the world. If you can help, please email me on hijama.mail@gmail.com or leave a comment* below.

2) Secondly, there is a hijama directory being compiled at www.hijamadirectory.co to address this very issue, i.e. Have all therapists worldwide on one directory so people can easily locate their nearest therapist. To add your details to this directory, please fill the form at this link: http://www.hijamadirectory.co/new-therapists/

15 MARCH, 2014: UPDATE : There is now an annual charge of £15 per entry to cover running and maintenance of the new map-based directory.

Similarly if you are looking for a hijama therapist near you, please leave a comment* below with details of your location so other blog readers who may be able to help can reply to your query.

And finally, if you are a hijama patient treated by your local therapist who you would like to recommend to others in your part of the world, again please leave a comment* with their details below.

Thanks

Shuaib Suria
